Methinks the idea of "competition" was overstated.

Ruffer was meant as a camp leg, and no more. He was out of football in 2012, and cut by the Pats shortly after mini-camp.

You could make a very good argument that they've had other kickers as insurance (Gramatica in 2006, Graham in 2011), but Gostkowski has NEVER faced true competition for his spot.

I'm seriously impressed by Allen's situational punting. The moon shot that foiled Welker last week along with this week's game killer show tremendous control and versatility for a rookie.

His absence can have repercussion if we are going any further. Not only do we need to have a new punter if he can't go, but we need someone to get chemistry with Gostkowski when it comes to holding the ball for field goals.

I think you give a mulligan to Allen. Crappy snap, what do you expect. Also, Allen has done well as a rookie punter. Remember, he is a LEFTY punter, which punt-returners are not use to.

If you look at the replay, a Colt put his helmet into Allens' right shoulder.
