Roster upgrade is vital!

Roster areas in need of improvement

1. Left tackle - Protect Maye at all costs
2. Wide Receiver - Give Maye something other than average to work with
3. Right tackle - see 1; adding two quality tackles will help the less than stellar guard play
4. Defensive tackle - teams run all over us. Need a dude to pair with Barmore
5. Defensive end/Edge - Put some pressure on opposing QBS
6. Coverage linebacker - anyone else tired of seeing Tavai dropping into coverage?
7. CB2 - Paired up with Gonzo, will make the safeties job easier
8. Center - can't rely on David Andrews health wise
9. Safety - Dugger has fallen off the cliff
10. K - Slye is a journeyman... we need another Gostkowski
What Pape you don't like one of the best DL in the league in goddy????.. there have been patriots defenses that have given up historical passing yards.. 2011&2012.. but they never looked at pathetic up front like this years teams. Teams are trying out new plays against them. I'm with you on everything 1-10.
Can I add this?

Dugger has played hurt all season according to Zo he had a high ankle sprain and really never healed like he thought. No excuse making just I knew something had to be up with him he's a far better player than this season.

Coverage LB.. losing Mac Wilson was a blow to the defense he could cover backs and blitz the QB.. sneakily big loss.

There's definitely a lot working against the Patriots in free agency:

1) Team doesn't look on the cusp of competing at all.

2) While I think some might overstate how negatively other teams' players will view Mayo and the staff here, I doubt anyone sees them as a draw either. If you have to grade it as pass/fail, it's surely a fail.

3) Taxes are high in the area so contract value here is functionally less than a lot of other places.

4) This is not viewed as a fun place to live for young millionaires

5) Fan base has a nasty reputation in the sports world and specifically with this team now the fans are seen as having unrealistic expectations and being entitled which only makes them nastier.

6) The media here is venomous and stoops to unprofessional levels to dehumanize players. It's one thing to criticize play, but it's well known in the sports world that the media here doesn't just stick to on the field criticisms.

Lots of reasons why guys wouldn't want to come here, all else equal. All else isn't always equal though. End of the day, money matters to these guys as they want to set themselves and their family up for life. We're in position to offer more of it. Not everyone is going to be a locked in, top of the depth chart guy everywhere they go, so as a team with less overall talent that means we will have, on average across the roster, more opportunity for guys to play and showcase themselves for their next deals. If we go back to the 2021 spending spree, two guys I think we should highlight are Kendrick Bourne and Hunter Henry as far as the type of players we should be in good position to sign this year.

Bourne was going into his age 26 season. He had played some, and flashed a little in SF, but hadn't really broken out. Everyone would prefer to be paid well on a great team playing a major role, but that's not always out there. For a guy in Bourne's position, opportunity is important. Not every team was going to be offering him the chance to step into a key role and showcase himself. At the WR position specifically (and other spots), we have the same to offer. If you're a WR not good enough to be penciled into the #1 or #2 spot on every depth chart on a mega-deal, then this is a great place to come in and showcase yourself on a strong but relatively modest 2-3 year deal and set yourself up for another run in free agency. Your path to a key role is better here, and unlike last year there's a QB that actually looks competent enough to make you look good if you play good. If you're a rotational edge rusher or interior DL, we lack depth at those spots so your path to more regular playing time is easier.

At the WR position, guys like Darius Slayton or Elijah Moore could fall into this category. A better team might offer them a more stable situation and a comparably solid contract, but with that stability also probably comes a harder path to the type of volume that could set them up for a bigger payday in 2-3 years as those guys are still young enough for another FA deal. Azeez Ojulari or Baron Browning are guys on the EDGE who could profile similarly.

Hunter Henry was in a bit of a different scenario. He had already "broken out" with the Chargers, to a certain degree. But for him, there were injury concerns. He was one of those guys who was a proven good player, but there was a wart with him that prevented other teams from wanting to commit. The Patriots decided to overlook that concern and take the plunge with a top of the market deal for him. Henry's wart was injury history, but for other players it could be age or locker room concerns. Guys like Chris Godwin, Amari Cooper, Dre Greenlaw, Hassan Reddick, Cam Robinson, etc. might all be overlooked to some degree in free agency because of age/injury/character concerns. That could create a scenario where NE can outbid what other teams will pay by enough to land them.

If anyone here is looking for free agency as a means to add a ton of top talent that yields a quick turnaround, I think they'll be very disappointed. But there should be ample opportunity for an influx of talent across the roster. It's tough for this team to really do anything well right now because they lack even baseline talent at most positions. It's hard to win when pretty much every position group is below average or worse. Adding some respectability across the roster will go a long way, and even as a "bad situation" they should still be able to do that in free agency.

Some of these guys will have better years next wether that's because they were hurt, they were out of position due to other injuries, just better coaching, or whatever else.

How many and who we can actually count on will be important to next year as much as the draft class and free agent class.

Upgrading the roster is what's more important heading into 2025. Yes of course we all know about the coaching. However if we do move on from Mayo we still are stuck with the 32nd ranked roster.

We have starting offensive tackles that probably should be in the semi-pro league not the pros! A lot of great scenarios, and ideas have been mentioned on the forum of how to get talent back in Foxboro.

I say aside from going after Higgins in FA try to trade for a DK Metcalf, Chris Olave or a DJ Moore. While still taking a WR in the draft. We have to explore all avenues we are not a organization that's in a position to turn our nose up to talent!

On Defense like most of you I've never seen a Patriots defense get pushed around the line of scrimmage like this season's defense. Getting physical athletic DTs and DL that can contain Running Backs, and push Interior Lineman back is badly needed.

I just wanted to post something to get the new year started with where our focus should be on the roster. Like to hear your thoughts!
Nope

Our focus for the next few weeks should be the coaching.

THEN comes fee agency.

We all know about OT and WR being highest priority but we could use upgrades all across the defense with the exception of Gonzo. White and Barmore certainly have potential too.

Ok then hire your new coach and keep the 32nd ranked roster. If BB couldn't do it then NO ONE can!!

Absolutely agree!! We need athletic, fast, gap penetrative DL and DEs guys that have a quick get off. Our players up front are reactionary instead of dictating the line of scrimmage. Well see on FS marpu looks the part.. so a healthy Dugger, peppers and marpu should be a good safety group. We need another CB opposite Gonzo.

Barring the injuries suffered this season the team was a couple offensive tackles and much better coaching away from competing for the AFC East.

Better coaches would have maintain last year’s very good defense, they would have made sure this team was well conditioned, disciplined and performing.

Look at the Commanders, look at the Patriots… their situations and 4 wins last year and rookie QB’s almost mirror each other.

This team needs a better GM and to hire a legitimate head coach… without that talent is almost irrelevant.

Harbaugh fixed the Chargers in one offseason, it takes someone who knows how.

Well peppers will be 29.. so he's a year older Granted the time off was probably good for his body.. he will be back.. a healthy Dugger, Mapu..I'm really rooting for the FS position he has shown he can be that. I'm expecting a ferocious pass rush next season I just sense that they will go hard to improve the front. We need to just try and get as much talent as possible across the board. I'm talking impactful players we have enough JAGS already.

Real you're too much.
Tavai is a solid player he's just not a coverage LB.. he's a great player when you have your full compliment of guys.. without Bentley he's exposed.

Absolutely agree. Great comparison on the commanders. Just like us.. new coaching, rookie QB they are rebuilt In one single season. However with this roster wozzy.. the greatest to ever do it could only get 4 wins out of it.. I doubt anyone else could no one is on BBs level as a coach and GM.

@Pape another thing I wanted to mention. I see some post on changing the coaching wich is warranted not going to lie. However we have to think. The GOAT, NFL living legend, there is no one close save for andy Reid as far coaching to Bill. If he couldn't get more than 4 wins out this 32nd ranked roster last season then no one can. ???

The big difference was the last few seasons there was a power struggle between Jonathan and Bill.

There were elements of the team, specifically offensively and personnel wise that were built by collaboration… Wolf and Jonathan.

You can’t beat other teams when you are fighting amongst yourselves and people are rowing in opposite directions. If Jonathan wanted Bill gone, he should have done it years ago instead of meddling in coaching and player hires and installing a west coast offense Bill clearly didn’t want.

The 2024 Patriots are all on the same page, everyone was hired and speak with one voice… and it’s still a disaster. One of the best defenses in the NFL last year with the same personnel stink this year… that’s execution, scheme and coaching. It’s clear from the stark difference between 2021 and now that collaboration has been responsible for this nose dive.

thing is we don't know what BB could have gotten out of this roster... The improvement in the qb role alone, combined with a better defensive philosophy, better game prep, this year could have surpassed last year... but we will never know... its water under the bridge.

i worry about next year because i think Mayo is not a game planner, and misses things he should be noticing because it appears hes not involved in that process... I do not know that for certain, but iirc, his coordinators set the game plan and he just okays it... he should be developing the game plans in conjunction with his coordinators...

Interesting... I've noticed something of note Mayo said Monday he said "ownership and I meet all the time and we are all on the same page " what that says to me is they are content and knew going in that Mayo would struggle his first season. That they are sticking it through with him and believe in him. Everything you said has 100%merit. However I just Don't believe they are pulling the plug on he nor wolf.

I definitely agree especially on the defensive side. I have pointed out that Mayo, covington, pelligrino, Brian have been the carry over. However the scheme isn't working.. well they don't have the players in the defensive line to pressure the passer.. Last season they were one of the best teams generating pressure. Is why I'm down on covington.

Personally, Im just here for the collective meltdown to when this offseason goes to **** somehow

Im all in for signing Safeties, center, old linemen and cornerbacks!
don't forget long snappers and special teams aces!

you are right. they are not going to get rid of him.

They should fire him. He is a horrible coach. Period. Nothing has improved, even incrementally. In fact, its gotten worse. He is another **** McPherson, another Clive Rush. Great guy, Great player. Horrible NFL coach. In fact, I do not think its an exaggeration to say he is the worst NFL coach I have ever seen.

The Krafts need to cut him loose. Now. Not next year. Unless whole sale changes are made, this team is going to under perform again next year. Count on it.
