Daniel Fells could be a younger Alge Crumpler for us. Obviously, Belichick's think a lto of him, guaranteeing him $2M and giving him a 3 year contract.

Fells will be primarily a 3rd blocking tight end, but can catch if need be, and could be our #2 TE if one of our studs is injured, or needs a series off.

He's Gronk insurance among other things. The Pats have now invested heavily in their 2TE style of offense. The X's and O's will still remain even if the players themselves can't make it on the field due to injuries. So it behooves the Pats to have players capable of being able to play the offense, even if it isn't quite to the level of Gronk/Hernandez.

From what we can Gather Fells is a starting caliber 2-way TE. A decent blocker and a capable receiver. If Gronk went down, its not like we'd have to scrap the offense. The same goes for Shiancoe and Hernandez. Not only that. It allows the Pats not to have to play G&H virtually every down. Its a long season and being able to give them full series off over the course of it, without an appreciable drop off, only makes them more effective during the playoffs

It also means less reliance on WR's who seem to be so difficult to cultivate for this offense.

Not that it matters much but it also makes it interesting to see how the Pats will use Ballard next season, if Fells is successful at filling the Gronk role. It could be that BB is stockpiling TE's as they are becoming even more valuable in the league's eyes. So come next season, Ballard might turn BB's $500,000 investment into a 2nd day pick. I'd do that all day.

Crumpler was an excellent blocking TE. Fells is an average/below-average blocker. They're not really comparable talents.

To have Crumpler paving the way for Ridley. That indeed would be something.

Daniel Fells is a good player he had 41 catches in 2010 with Sam Bradford as a rookie. Last season he didn't see a lot of opportunities in Denver with Tebow as the QB. But I think Gronk would of had a down year with Tebow as QB, he didn't complete many passes and when he did they were usually deep balls.

I expect that he will be used in as FB in I-Formation adding a receiving option out of the backfield. In addition he will fill the blocking role that Solder was used for last year once again adding more of a receiving option.

Obviously he will back up the two studs as well.
