RIP Ron Meyer

Paid some big dough at SMU back in the day.

The legend is it was Hannah going to Patty Sullivan which got him fired.

RIP

Not everyone here is old enough to remember Meyers run with the Patriots. He engineered a huge turnaround in his first season and won AFC coach of the year. While newer fans won’t be very familiar with that period everyone knows what happened when Meyer called for the spot to be swept of snow just before a game-deciding kick...

May the good Lord rest you and keep you, Ron... and thanks for the memories.

Especially this one. :)

Meyer used to constantly tell players to empty their buckets, to which Hannah reportedly would object "empty your own dam bucket." He had a veteran problem. Still had some good periods.

It was a long way from Dallas to Foxboro, especially back then.

When Meyer was fired it was somewhat controversial. It was (and still is) very unusual for a coach with a winning record to be fired. The Pats were 5-3 when he was let go and replaced by Raymond Berry.

He got some revenge when the Colts hired him a couple years later. Meyer took over a zero-win Indy team and won each of the final three games of that season. The following year his Colts won the AFC East by one game over the Patriots.

A bit of trivia. The Patriots have fired not one, but two head coaches who never had a losing season with the Pats: Meyer and Pete Carroll.

During the "dark days" Meyer was a glimmer of hope that things might get better, but the organization was so inept during those days the dysfunction of the Pats ownership always overshadowed this team..

Cannot consider Parcells as he seemed to be such a mercenary and his stunt about coming back on a different plane after the last Superbowl he ever coached was bush league, he was a complete distraction in the week prior to the Superbowl.. Parcells spent much of the week ducking questions from the press about whether he was about to quit and take over the Jets.

All due respect to his memory but not sure I agree.

Ray the Caretaker Berry ahead of Fairbanks? No way.

Like Fairbanks before him, one of Meyer's assets was his in-depth, personal knowledge of college players he had scouted and recruited. No coincidence then that the best drafts the Pats ever had were those that immediately followed their arrival in Foxborough.
