Report: Mayo Has Surgery, Could Miss Season with Torn Pectoral

If that meany Dr. Gill hadn't insisted on implanting screws and a plate in Mayo's chest, this wouldn't be happening....

I hope the Pats aren't considering any of this newfangled modern medicine to speed his recovery. They should stick to the tried and true methods of treating injuries. Just put leeches on him....

If it's the blowhard Mike Salk I say he knows nothing.

No it is Mike Petraglia:

Linebacker Jerod Mayo has had surgery on a torn pectoral muscle and is out at least eight weeks, a source tells WEEI.com. Depending on the severity of the tear and the subsequent rehab, Mayo could return to working out in six weeks. If there’s a chance the captain of the Patriots defense could return for late in the season and the playoffs, the team is likely to hold off placing him on injured reserve.

It Is What It Is » Analysis: What does loss of Jerod Mayo mean for Patriots defense?

Torn pectoral ... could miss season???

Probably will miss season ... Ted Johnson never got past those torn pecs.

Orakpo on the Redskins had the same problem.

It's an issue that is easily re-injured.

BTW there are 11 weeks of regular season left.... and at least 1 week of post-season for the Pats. Possibly 2 or 3.

So if the recovery time is 6-8 weeks.. give or take a week or two... Mayo should be back in time for the playoffs.

Obviously it hurts having Mayo out, but MLB is the position we are extremely deep at (Spikes, Hightower). Fletcher and Collins are both decent players from what we've seen.

Anyone have a clip of the play when Mayo got injured?

This is 2005 season level of ridiculousness.

How the hell are the patriots going to stop the run now?

I tore a pec bench pressing. It's a long recovery. Granted, I don't have access to the medicine and other available medical personnel Mayo has access to, but at the same time, I didn't have to get ready to play professional football.

I can't imagine him being ready for the playoffs. Ray Lewis was able to get back from a torn triceps (?) for the playoffs last year. So maybe there is a chance for him to be back.

Time for Fletcher and Collins to step up.

As people said, Ted Johnson had torn biceps and not pecks.

Also, several players have had torn pectorials and returned just fine (although they missed the rest of the season). Elvis Dumervil tore his pectorial in the preseason of 2010 and had 9.5 sacks and 42 tackles in 2011. Mario Williams tore his pectoral in October of 2011 and had 10.5 sacks last year even though he had a nagging wrist injury.

Those examples are not good to give hope for a return this year, but it is promising for Mayo to back to his old self next year.

The one positive about the depth at LB is the Pats like most teams are in sub packages for a majority of the game especially against teams like Denver. That means the Pats only need two LBs on the field during those plays. Unfortunately, Mayo was really coming on in coverage over the last two or three games.

So??? Spikes, Collins, and Hightower?? Slow set of lb's.

Any chance we make a trade for a linebacker?? Anyone out there??

You think Spikes can run with Julius Thomas? I don't..

you know, at some point all these injuries will pile up enough to begin to affect the pats record as a whole

i dont know when that threshold will be reached, but at this rate, it wont be too long from now

what the hell, so to get this straight, our offense had an unprecedented turnover in the offseason, and its share of injuries this year so far, and now are defense is losing players like its nothing

WTF

Just a few weeks ago LB DJ Williams of the Bears suffered a torn pec and was ruled out for the year. I guess it depends on the severity of it but from everything I'm reading, it sounds like he's done for the year. I can't imaging that's the type of injury a player in his position can risk coming back too soon from.

no wilfork no mayo and maybe no Kelly for a few weeks the run D just took one more big hit

They use leeches in this newfangled modern medicine, too.

What have we seen from either of them? I'm optimistic about Collins, but Fletcher is a vet who has never played a significant role on a defense. Maybe he'll be another Ninkovich-caliber find, but we haven't seen anything to really give us an impression of what he is or isn't.

As for the recovery, I'd love to be surprised, but by all accounts it's just not realistic to expect him to make it back this season. Torn pecs take too long to heal. Sucks, but in that case I'm more concerned about making sure that he makes it back to 100%. If they want to list him as a gameday inactive for the next few weeks to see if he can maybe make it back for the playoffs, then awesome, but my guess would be that he'll be IRed shortly.

Great....offense needs to find it's grove fast. This is why you don't trade players like Spikes because you have too many quality lbers. Time for him to show he can be a 3-down lber.

It's a shame mayo went down after all these other injuries. I am however, intrigued to see how fletcher plays because if I recall he was good in pass coverage. I think lb depth is one of our strength so with spikes, Hightower, fletcher, and Collins I think we will manage.

Get well soon mayo, maybe he can make it back for the playoffs if he uses some of ray ray's spray

I hope this doesn't hurt the overall tackling on the team. Mayo really helped stop plays in their tracks.
