I don't really want to turn this into a discussion on the relative merits of American English and British English but I've heard people say both "root" and "rowt" for the word "route". Is there some regional divide on this or was it just a fluke?

You mean like "crik" and "creak"? I tend to think it's our rebellious nature, coming out subconsciously as a caution flag for any of those furrin fellas who might consider reclaiming the colonies. It's bad enough their fifth columnists from North of the Border are allowed to operate with impunity along the southern beaches.
