Reiss: Jets Blitzed 16 of 29 passing plays

Blitzing over 50% of the time on passing downs is a much or more of an abnormality as rushing only three players in the 3-4 base defense 33% of the time on passing downs.

Rushing four is considered normal regardless of base defense type.

If you can't acknowledge that rushing 3 as many times as they did - twice as many times as they rushed 4 - is an anomaly, then I can't help you, I'm sorry.

It is even more anomalous when you consider that they played from behind the whole game.

The right number of rushers to send against Brady is one that doesn't give him all day, but also doesn't leave the receivers so uncovered as to make things super-easy. And guess what -- the only number the Jets had any success with at all seems to have been the middle figure of 5 rushers.

As for Moss getting all the passes on all-out blitzes -- duh. When they send that many guys, Brady has to dump off to whoever gets open FAST. And Moss is seemingly always open.

What this suggests is if you're going to sell out and bring the house, you should pick a down that Moss isn't in the game and see if Brady has his timing and coordination down yet with whoever else is out there.

Patten used to be great at getting open for the megablitz passes. Ditto the fundamentally quick guys like Brown and Branch. It remains to be seen how the new crew (Moss excepted) will do.

I think that it is a credit to Moss that he had the sensibility to cut off his routes and get open for Brady when the defense blitzed. This had got to increase Tom's confidence factor greatly when he knows he will have a great target like Moss to go on when the D brings the heat.

I'll agree with one poster that a smart defensive coordinator may try to take advantage of this. One way perhaps would be to use a zone blitz, and rotate a defender to cut off the passing lane where Brady expected Moss to be open. However if Moss beats you to the spot, that is still going to be difficult to pull off. It is amazing what a factor Moss has been in just one game for the Patriots. He WILL impact defensive game plans from here on out. Nobody wants to see Moss put up another 180 on their D.

The Pats rush 3 rushers many times and did so on Sunday. It isn't all that uncommon. I will it is a decent amout to rush three, but they did rush 5 or more players 16 times which is also a lot for a 29 passing down game. I may have overstated the comparison though.

Again, you are confusing passing downs with overall downs. What does playing from behind have to do with it? The Pats passed on 29 plays and rushed for 37 plays. Reiss's breakdown is only on 44% of the overall offensive downs (the passing downs). The Pats only passed 10 times in the second half.

Also, Brady passed on 3rd and more than 8 twice and a 1st and 20 once, those probably make up 3 of the 7 three man rushing plays since those are typical three man rushing plays. So that means that probably only four plays the Jets only rushed three defenders where it wouldn't be obvious to do so.
