Ranking the Pats Super Bowl journeys

I just put together a spreadsheet which ranks the Pats Super Bowl journeys based on their opponenets' Win-Loss records. The opponents are from the Divisional round through Super Bowl (no wild card).

I agree with your rankings.

I'm not sure any team would have a stronger road to plow than 2004. The 14-2 Colts (Peyton's then-record year), the 15-1 Steelers (who beat us to end the 21 game streak earlier in the year) and then the clearly best team in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles.

To me, that Patriots team is the one that comes closest to the domination of this year's team.

I'm not sure any team would have a stronger road to plow than 2004. The 14-2 Colts (Peyton's then-record year), the 15-1 Steelers (who beat us to end the 21 game streak earlier in the year) and then the clearly best team in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles.

To me, that Patriots team is the one that comes closest to the domination of this year's team.

Actually, as someone noted above, the Giants road to the SB this season is (statistically) more difficult, at least if you look at games from the divisional round on:

Dallas (13-3)
GB (13-3)
NE (16-0)
Combined: 42-6

In fact, the Patriots stretch in 2004 was the most difficult road to the SB ever, so the Giants now take the cake in that department (though their WC win over TB hurts their cause when looking at the entire playoffs).

The spreadsheet lists those Colts as 12-4, but I thought it was better than that.

I recall that our Super Bowl run that Eagles year set the record for exactly this, and the record probably still stands.

The difference is that Giant's won't be able to win the SB. The Pats won the SB in 04 while facing 3 extremely dominant teams.

Note: Remember, though, that the only reason the Pats had such a tough road to the SB in 04 was because weren't the number one seed. This year we earned our easier schedule. I would say that our regular season schedule was a little bit tougher, only because we had everyone playing all out against us in the second half of the season, trying to be the team to prevent 16-0. The 04 team faced some tough teams (Indy, Pitt, etc) but the teams playing them weren't playing as intense/all-out as they were this year down the stretch.

at New England (season opener)
vs. Jacksonville (I remember Peyton and Wayne having a spat on the sideline)
at Kansas City
at Denver (last game of the season, second stringers played)
