2016 was only the second time since the 1970 merger that we did not face the Colts.

The only other time we had not faced them was in 2002, which was the first year that the division's realigned.

Every other year during that stretch: we played them due to them being in our division, (70-01), them having the same divisional ranking as us, (too many years to count) us playing the AFC South, (2012) or us facing them in the postseason. (2013)

2016 was the second time we had never faced them since the merger, and 2017 could be the third time if we don't face off against them in the postseason.

Rivalries, divisional or otherwise, fuel fan interest, involvement, attendance and intensity.

Pats' include Jets, Bills, Dolphins, Colts and Raiders.

Steelers, Broncos, Ravens...haven't played them as much.

How would the forum feel about a divisional re-alignment trade that sent the Dolphins to the AFC South and the Colts to the AFC East?

I know this wasn't done originally to maintain rivalries, but does it get to a point in which it makes too much sense to make the trade?

No thanks, the fish have been divisional rivals for a long long time and I want them in the East.

one team owner has fired the greatest coach ever, the coach that the team was named after and forced the greatest football player to retire.....Art Modell.
Bill Belichick
Paul Brown

The only realignment that I'd be in favor of would be one that has each team playing as close to the same record as possible. Giving teams and their fans a playoff game for having a better record than only 3 out of 15 other teams is a disgrace. Start with two 8 team divisions and go from there.

Not that I would support it, because it would make for a tougher division schedule (but a great rivalry), but the realignment that would make the most geographical sense would be to move the Colts to the AFC Central to be with Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Pitt, and move the Ravens to the AFC East with the Pats, Bills, and Jets. Miami joins the AFC South with the Jags, Texans, and Titans.

You simply have a way too logical mind.

You need to go out and get drunk.

Nice thought. I like that idea. I know the intent was to maintain pre-existing rivalries but I think enough new rivalries would form if they did just go on geographical sense.

Speaking of geograph, a random thought occured to me about Chicago.

The Blackhawks are in the WEST.

The Bulls are in the EAST.

The Bears are in the NORTH.

The Cubs are in the CENTRAL.

Steelers - Ravens is probably the biggest rivalry in the NFL.
I think they would have to keep those 2 teams together.
I sometimes forget the Browns became the Ravens.

I'm not disagreeing with you about the Steelers and Ravens, but the Pats and Ravens have a pretty good rivalry going already and playing twice a year would only intensify it. Besides, wouldn't it be great to see Belichick pull out a new trick play twice a year and watch Harbaugh go ballistic on the sideline?

I think the Pats vs. Ravens is one of those fine wines you save for the playoffs.

Steelers v. Ravens is just a great beer you can pull out of the refrigerator whenever you want. Plus, it has Duke-UNC type animosity. It's more like NE vs. NYJ (when we were kids and the Jets didn't totally suck)
