If they ever decide to rename Rock and Roll, Chuck Berry's name would be on the short list.

I saw Chuck Berry in Lewiston, Maine many years ago. The show only lasted about 30 minutes, when they announced that Chuck was suddenly called away and had to leave early.

Chuck was a very temperamental guy, and what really happened is that he got pissed off at the promoter/venue management, and I can't say I blame him.

In one song he started singing "turn the house lights on, I want to see everybody" and it took at least 5 minutes until the idots in charge figured out what he wanted and finally turned the lights on.

Sad news.

Are icons dying more frequently these days, or are there just more celebrities and more widespread death reports due to everywhere, every minute news cycle/ social media?

I heard people discussing it this morning on the radio, as apparently Chuck's entire operation was a one-man show, just Chuck, his guitar, and a briefcase.

He worked alone and got himself to gigs by himself, where he would get paid cash and then play.

He didn't have a band, and it was the promoter's job to get an accompanying band for him.

The guy was The Original. Every garage rock band back in my band days knew how to play "Johnny be good". (Or at least we thought we knew. )

RIP Chuck Berry. You left an influential mark on our society that few ever do.

Sad news.

Are icons dying more frequently these days, or are there just more celebrities and more widespread death reports due to everywhere, every minute news cycle/ social media?

I think it's mostly that social media has created a situation where instead of people seeing that someone died and going 'Oh man, that's really sad, Lorne Greene' died to their spouse they're going onto fb/twitter et al and making anguished posts about how personally impacted they are by the death of someone who they saw once in a rerun of an old TV show on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

It's a form of narcissism. I'm not saying that there aren't people who are really sad Chuck Berry died but there are definitely people I think are donning sackcloth for the upvotes.

RIP Chuck ... My Ding a Ling was a huge summer song.

I had that song on a 45 ,my brother and I had to play that song every day for a couple of years. I remember the documentary called Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll. Great film.
