Joe Burrow came in this season as a second year quarterback with noticably improved arm strength. He still doesn't have a cannon for an arm but he definitely added a few mph to his fastball. Below is an interview with Chris Simms where he talks about a couple of the things he did that really helped. (start at 4:30). The question is why not Mac? It's the only thing potentially holding him back from being an elite qb.

well yes and some WR like Chase could help as well ;)

I am pretty sure Rodgers came out of Cal with a not too great arm but of course he then had 3 years to sit on the bench and get better. It CAN be done. It’s not easy though.

There's nothing wrong with Mac's arm strength. The problem is simple. He needs time to get his timing perfect with his WR options, and he could use a top notch slot guy to help push the ball down the field and let Meyers play the hybrid Troy Brown style role he was born for.

Honestly feel like Jones sees the field better right now than Brady did in 01. He's a very good game manager and his arm is better than people think. Just got to take the time to gain experience and get used to the nuances of NFL play.

I'm very positively surprised at how productive Jones already is when you compare him to his classmates. He came advertized as the most pro ready QB of the group and he delivered that. But even he needs time to finish off his development. We'll be rewarded for allowing him that time.

BTW I wouldn't put Burrow level expectations on Jones. The good news is we probably don't have to, unlike the Bengals the Patriots know how to build a team around their QB and we should be in the playoff hunt, at the very ,east, for the next few years, whether or not Jones breaks through.

For the record, I think it's almost inevitable that Jones does eventually break through. It may not be on our shedule however.

BTW I'd love to see the Patriots bring in Zach Pascal as a lower level support WR. Pascal has done a good job in the chaotic situation in Indy, learning quickly to be a decent target for both Brissett and Rivers. Reminds me a bit of Chris Hogan in that regard as one of those guys who just manages to get open somehow and is easy to throw to.

He did struggle last year but so did the Colts' entire receiver corps, and it's pretty clear that Wentz has a lot to do with why. I think he'd be a great buy low investment.

I agree. Mac's big problem is he's not in total command, and so you don't see him step into throws. You kind of see him diagnose what is going on and he throws flat-footed, and it's impressive because he's pretty accurate

I want to see him step into the pocket and rifle that ball. Get a good base.

Sometimes his throws seem to take forever.

I think it's a combination of mechanics and strength.

Not a knock. I think he's gonna be great.

That will happen when he reaches the point when he can stop thinking so much and just start acting. Like I said (and I know you know this, speaking to the gallery here) these things just take time

How Patriots' Mac Jones can improve his arm strength, physical tools this offseason

We did drills with weighted balls and other exercises to speed up our throwing motion and improve fast-twitch muscles. A lot of quarterbacks that I’ve been around more recently, whether it’s Dak Prescott or Matthew Stafford, all have very similar approaches in terms of doing workouts to build arm strength, consistency and durability in the shoulder.

I hope he gets serious about it and works on it during the offseason. I think his footwork is pretty decent and he moves fine - he can even run for first downs on occasion (he is not a threat to take it the house like Allen or Jackson) - but ya know C tier. Like a Baker Mayfield. He has pretty good decision making.

But his arm strength is why he slipped and his #1 issue preventing him from being a star. If he had a rocket arm - he would have easily gone #1. And he would have played over those other guys at Alabama. To those who don't think he has a problem there - I ask you..

Which NFL QBs have weaker arms then Mac Jones? I want to know what you think. Maybe Hurts? Tua? I am at a loss.

Almost all of Mac's best throws were touch throws. We want to see out route lasers out of the guy. Seemed like he had more velocity in preseason - maybe his shoulder was hurt.

The good news is that arm strength can be improved. It is not impossible. He might not become Josh Allen or John Elway but if he can at least match Burrow or Watson - that's more then enough.

Great news is it will all improve as his mechanics and ability to read defenses improves. Add in a full offseason of diet, training, working on his lower body strength, and I truly believe he is going to go into next season looking like a different qb. Year 3 is when most qb’s really hit their stride, but it feels like he is a bit ahead of the curve and still has all this room to grow.

Mac's arm will naturally be stronger in his 2nd season without a whole lot of training....not worried.

It's not even necessarily pure arm strength from bad angles but rather improving his biomechanics so he's getting closer to his peak more consistently. That was the big improvement from Brady from early years to later on. If Mac is dedicated his functional velocity will improve a lot.

The people that don't think he has to improve his velocity are my favorite rn. Clearly lacking and if he wasn't a Pat it would talked about more. As someone who's thought he could improve his mechanics going back to last year, this is key. Release should / could improve as well.

Post snap processing, body / conditioning, footwork / mechanics is the list for me. Luckily all three could improve. I heard Aaron Rodgers and other great players from different sports talk about picking one thing and trying to master it in the off-season. He'll naturally be studying and working out so if he can make strides in his footwork, release point and other things we could see a big difference.

Tua isn't fair. His left arm might be hanging on by a strand of cartilage. I feel bad for him he's hurting.

Good thing is it's always easier to get stronger rather than more accurate.
