So recently I got around to finishing through the Patriots 2003 playbook (posted here a few months ago).

My question is: Do the Patriots still run the same Charlie Weiss offense anymore, or when he went to Notre Dame did it also leave with him?

I thought Charlie had a knack for calling the right play at the right time, and he always had a few gadget/unconventional plays that I liked. I didn't see the same style as much in 2005.

Does Josh McDaniels make his own playbook, or do the Patriots keep the same system and just plug in people?

I've long been curious if playbooks were considered intellectual property, and if so, if they migrated with the coach or if a franchise owned them.

.

Good question. One way to look at it is that while the team owns the playbook, it is the new head coach coming in that installs it.

I think that we will get back to more of a possession offense this year with a 2 TE, 2 WR formations. The safeties will have to worry about the TEs which means the WRswill be one-on-one.

Weiss in spirit...

The Pats play the same Weis spread O, and I believe use the same terminology. The play calling is different obviously.

As much as Charlie called plays that drove fans and NEM in particular to dsitraction, I beleive Charlie actually wasted plays to insure that he met his quota of say "run on second and ten", so there was no "book" on him. I'm convinced he "set up" some gadget plays and waited for the right time to call them.

That was, and is, his genius. No two play-callers using the same playbook would call the same play in certain situations. So its the same but different.

BB wanted Charlie for his playbook as much as his ability to teach and irritate NEM.

McDaniels is part of the Charlie Weis heritage; what needs to be remembered when assessing the 2005 offensive play calling is the different way different people see problems. Josh undoubtedly was more conservative then Charlie was as he learned how to run an offense as coordinator.

Josh was also hindered by Tommy having more freedom at the line, I credit some of the problems with Tommy using the same check downs in a predictable pattern. Hopefully the self assessment documented this trend and has the offensive staff is working on a training program to help make Tommy more unpredictable.

That's a good point I hadn't thought about. So, in addition to scoring points, Charlie would balance his play-calling so there wouldn't be any tendencies found during film or scouting... that's smart, thinking long-term.

Going back to playbooks, I always thought that one advantage of Belichick when he came to the Jets, is he knew the Jets defensive and offensive plays, which forced the Jets to come up with and learn some new things.

I wonder if the Patriots will change their playbooks more, now that Mangini has moved onto New York.

What about the draw play to Faulk on third and long?

If a team has to account for Kevin up the middle, the pass defense is just that much softer.

I remember watching the Indiana play-off game with a friend of mine who didn't really know the Pat. They called that play and he said "why the &$!* did they do that?" and I could just reply: "Don't worry. It's a Charlie Weis thing ..."

Great memories!
