With UFA and the draft coming fast lets take an actual look at each position with our current starters if camp broke today.

QB - Brady
RB - Ridley
3rd Down RB - Vereen
WR - Lloyd (could be cut according to reports)
WR - Slater
TE - Gronkowski
TE - Hernandez
LT - Solder
LG - Mankins
C - Wendell
RG - Connolly
RT - Cannon
LE - Ninkovich
DT - Armstead/Deaderick
NT - Wilfork
RE - Jones
SLB - Hightower
MLB - Spikes
WLB - Mayo
CB - Dennard
CB - Dowling
FS - McCourty
SS - Wilson/Gregory

So looking at this what positions do we need to upgrade? And who would you guys suggest upgrading them with UFA names/draft names?

I might want an upgrade over Slater at WR.

Is Dowling ambulatory?:confused2:

Thanks for the list, but i think the best moves mostly would be to sign some of our people firast, then see what the real holes are. We obviously need at least one receiver either to fill a role or develop. Kyle Love should be part of the DT rotation, as his skills better fit run defense than the other two you mentioned. Another sand in the pants guy could change that, though.

I would say CB, safety, WR, big one big DT. We have depth at pass rusher, but not enough front line power yet. It's not always about how many guys you have at a position. I could see their whole front seven change depending on an impact player at either DT, pass rush, or linebacker being available. I don't see the three large linebackers, Wilfork and versatile backups and the combination of Nink and the potential of Chandler Jones being etched in stone. Rather than a hole to be filled, I see an impact player anywhere causing some roles to shift. Problems are: making teams pay for doubling wilfork, coverage by linebackers and best using Ninkovich while developing a devastating pass rush.

Ninkovich and Hightower have some position flexibility and Armstead seems a more talented tackle end hybrid than Deaderick. I just don't think the dust has settled on our defensive alignment. Also, Fletcher fits nicely in the hole in our pass defense if he can find a regular role

WR and CB have to be our biggest needs.

Slater and Dowling as starters

Every place else I could at least live with what we have I think.

I might want an upgrade over Slater at WR.

Malcolm Williams was the only other option at CB and Kamar Atkins at WR.. Working with what we have.

He's ready for his break out year

If he doesnt perform this year just add him to the list of Crable and Pryor. Guys that get paid to rehab their injuries in physical therapy all season.

I'm hoping your right though, without the sarcasm.

No, I think I said it. I appreciate the list and also Mgteich's. I don't like to make lists.

Though it might seem I'm mocking them, I respond at positions where the list is helpful and give an alternative to the list where appropriate.

For example, I think Vollmer will be signed because the team will make it so. If he isn't, we aren't devastated, since we have Cannon and even MacDonald, though not a scenario we'd want, then we look for someone (maybe just for depth). whether Cannon is ready or not is moot. He's played it, it's an opportunity and we'll see when it happens.

Same with Slater. Great special teamer, but there's no realistic scenario by which he is counted on as a "receiver". As a place holder, sure.

I like the approach the Patriots seem to be taking this year, namely address defensive holes through FA in the main and look to the draft to fill some holes/depth/future starters on offense. Using your list, I can see something like (changes in bold):

QB - Brady
RB - Ridley
3rd Down RB - Vereen
WR - 1st or 2nd round draft pick
WR - Welker
TE - Gronkowski
TE - Hernandez
LT - Solder
LG - Mankins
C - Wendell
RG - Connolly
RT - Cannon/2nd/3rd Rnd draft pick
LE - Ninkovich/ Free agency pickup (Freeney etc)
DT - Armstead/Deaderick
NT - Wilfork
RE - Jones
SLB - Hightower
MLB - Spikes
WLB - Mayo
CB - Dennard
CB - FA pickup x2 (Smith, Asomugha, Talib etc)
FS - McCourty
SS - FA pickup (Reed etc)

I agree with your approach.

I have two nitpicks.

I do not expect a starting WR from the draft, although we should draft a WR. I hope for Welker, Lloyd and Edelman to be back. Alternatively, their replacements should come out of free agency.

Also, I expect a veteran tackle to come out of free agency if Vollmer is not re-signed.

I understand that we will not get all that we want from free agency, but we very well might get quite a lot.

WR - 1st or 2nd round draft pick

I'm not sure I'm feeling a WR in the 1st round. I don't see a clear #1 receiver in this draft class and the #2 type receivers could extend into day 3. Not suggesting going the FA route since Wallace will want 11M+ and Jennings will almost certainly be overpaid. Better to just keep Lloyd and his manageable contract numbers.

WR - Welker

Unless he takes below market value (and he shouldn't/won't), I'm thinking it is time for Wes to move on. The Pats have plenty of options between the hashes and Welker seems like dedicating one too many players to the same area of the field. Welker becomes a crutch for Brady and that can be a liability in the playoffs. If Welker does go, it becomes very important to bring Edelperson back. Not the same player, but his versatility and familiarity could be the "patch" that helps Brady kick his Welker habit.

Maybe this is the year to double-up on WR in the middle rounds. Maybe Corey Fuller (good size, long speed) and Aaron Mellette (solid routes, good hands) could grow up together like Gronk and Hernandez.

LG - Mankins
C - Wendell
RG - Connolly

Nothing wrong with these guys and McDonald has shown up when needed...but I'm thinking this is my wildcard position for a mid-late pick. Dallas Thomas would be my choice for a day 2 pick. Fits the Mankins profile of a legit LT with the footwork and strength to slide inside. Day 3 option could be JC Tretter (same MO but small school). Doesn't seem to be a area of need but just got a feeling...

RT - Cannon/2nd/3rd Rnd draft pick

I've convinced myself that the only reason Vollmer isn't signed is that the Belichick let him explore his value in FA (that is important for some players). There is no excuse for Vollmer not lining up to Brady's right next year unless his medicals are a problem. Nothing will blow up this championship window (and my pleasant demeanor) than someone Kaczuring up the offense. This offense comes with a side of Vollmer. NO SUBSTITUTIONS!

LE - Ninkovich/ Free agency pickup (Freeney etc)

If the Pats get this position right, they could effectively punch their ticket to the SB. Ninkovich is a steady player that puts himself in position to make a difference, but like later-years Vrabel he just doesn't have the juice to deliver in the 2nd half if the opposing QB is chucking the ball around the field. I'm not sure Freeney is the answer but I don't have a better one. Would love to see Francis and Bequette step up this year.

CB - FA pickup x2 (Smith, Asomugha, Talib etc)

Almost certainly going to have 1 FA. I think CB may be where opportunity and need align for the Pats first pick. I would go to battle with Sean Smith, Xavier Rhodes, Dennard and Dowling.

FS - McCourty
SS - FA pickup (Reed etc)

While this seems to be conventional wisdom, I'm not buying. McCourty looked like a potential elite safety. Gregory is a fine player when you don't ask him to do too much (like the 2nd half of the AFCC game with Talib out). Wilson showed flashes and looks to be a prime candidate for a 2nd year leap forward. I do expect a FA safety to be added just because there are so many available...and Belichick isn't going to pass on a bargain. But I don't anticipate it being a priority early in FA.

So add a CB early in FA and the draft. Keep Lloyd, re-sign Edelperson and get a couple of WR in the middle rounds of the draft. Try to find an inexpensive pass rushing DE in FA, hope for Francis and Bequette to progress and find a TBC-like slipper late in the draft (Taylor?, Buchanan?, Goodman?). Re-sign Vollmer at all costs and get a development interior lineman late in the draft. Pray for health and roll the dice...
