"The Jets and Seahawks each reached deals with Branch for approximately $13 million in guaranteed money and $39 million over six years. In discussions with league sources close to the talks, I heard this weekend that the when both teams made their offers to New England, the Patriots did not counter either one. The Seahawks, my sources say, offered a second-round pick plus a lower pick; the Jets offered a second-rounder. The Patriots never asked for two first-round picks, contrary to what some people have said, and they were never offered a first-rounder. So it will be easy for the Patriots to say in arbitration that they were never offered what they consider to be fair market value for Branch."

Don't forget about this part :

"When Branch signed his original contract, there were escalators in place to pay him at the level of high-achieving receivers. If he had four 900-yard receiving seasons, he'd have $1.5 million added to his '06 base salary of $545,000. He had one such season, last year, when he gained 998 receiving yards, and thus had $500,000 added to his base pay this year, bringing the total to $1.05 million. There would be, in addition, $1.5 million added in total if he had four 1,100-yard seasons. So if he'd performed like a No. 1 all four years, and had in excess of 1,100 yards each season, his base salary this year would have been a respectable (though under-market) $3.55 million."

Of course what Branch, his agent, and lawyer don't seem to understand is that Branch is under contract and the Patriots have no obligation to come back with a counter offer or trade him at all - especially to a division or potential Super Bowl rival.

Period.

The irony is the Pats never countered the draft pick compensation offer much like Branch never counter offered the Pats contract proposal.

Interesting, more misinformation concerning the Pats. I'd really like to know why this is such a trend lately, Wendy Nix's dumb ass doing the reporting not withstanding.
this confirms this much .no accurate information leaves foxboro unless the pats want it too. the rest is the media trying to hit butterfiles with a baseball bat

Smart cookies over there in Foxboro.
Whenever i hear someone talk about things "blowing up in their faces", I just shake my head.
It may turn out that they screwed up, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Damn! That's a good thought. Can the Patriots now file a grievance that Team Branch did not bargain in good faith?

excellent point

The press release issued by the Pat's at 4:00 PM on Sept. 1 was certainly very odd: “No trade has been consummated." Chayut immediately filed a grievance, but the press release didn't say that no trade would be consummated for Branch. Also the deadline was for Branch to bring a trade to the Patriots, not for the Patriots to negotiate compensation.

The Pat's were reportedly continuing to talk to the Seahawks about compensation on Sept. 2 but by that time Chayut had filed his grievance.

the article also says
"I think, speaking of the Patriots, the mistake they made in trying to reel Deion Branch back into the fold was giving his agent permission to make a deal with other teams for a week -- when they didn't want to trade him at all."

so that can be the cause of DB's second grievence of not acting in good faith when trades were offered and they didnt respond.

alot of lack of good faith by everyone. it's turning into a joke. if he was smart he'd sign the three year deal and then he'd be a free agent against when the salary cap goes up again.

Just want to note that Peter King changed his mind and picked Indi for the Super Bowl. He was a New England fan all summer, but his mind has wandered into the toilet again.

king is fine imho. he does give some useful info. if someone picks against the pats doesnt mean he is idiotic just like someone who keeps chanting the pats all the time isnt the greatest writer.everyone is entitled to change their opinion. i dont agree with his pick but our team clearly isnt then favorite that everyone should keep picking and sticking with it with few questions about the team before the season.

Sources say the Pats have backed off requests for two first-round picks and would accept a first-round pick and a middle-round pick. Though the Seahawks didn’t offer higher than a second-round pick, a source they said they would be willing to trade their first-round pick, which would likely be low in the draft anyway.

Guess it depends who you want to believe.

I dont believe anybody anymore. From liars like Tomase to inside guys like my boy Reiss no one really knows.

The only people that know are; Pioli, Belichick, Branch, Chayut and Seahwaks management.

It alldon't mean diddly. There's no way legally anyone can judge how much a player's worth in trade by comparing him to another player.

Players have abilities, attitudes, size, speed and fit different systems better than others.

The only comparisons are the 1st rounder for a RFA and the 2 1sts for a franchised player.

No one has reached either plateau in offers, so these hearings will be a joke just like every lawyer said in the Tomase article.

We are not obligated to trade him either, IMO.

Joey Galloway,(traded for 2 #1's) wasn't a Super Bowl MVP, was he? That's just one comparison We could make, butwe won't have to.
