Per The Athletic Seahags have signed Witherspoon, Gonzo next?

Kraft's statement is meaningless absent an agreement on guarantees. I mean, $160M over four years with no guarantees would make Gonzalez the highest paid corner, right?
It is definitely NOT meaningless.
Kraft made a big deal about his announcement to make Gonzo the highest paid cb ever.
That obviously means the most guaranteed money. No way in hell can Kraft undo that.
Yes, Gonzo should be the highest paid cb right now( at least until the next top cb, like Surtain or Stingley, is up for a new contract. I believe both have already signed extensions so that should be a few years off).
Kraft was rash with his announcement. Yes, Gonzo deserves it, but Kraft showed very poor business acumen. He could learn from Gonzo who kept his mouth shut.

You’re not wrong but I think if the offer was short on guarantees, we would’ve found out via a media salvo from the other camp.

Will see, not much progress made according to the report.

There really couldn't be much progress, he was always waiting until Witherspoon signed, and until this deal was done there wasn't an idea of what the new market was.

Now we'll see what happens.

Gonzo 5 year 170 coming

Kraft and the Pats already stated that they intend to make Gonzo the highest paid CB.

If there is still delay, then its on Gonzo if his side insists to negotiate with the proposed 2027 cap amount.

Unless something else came out....they didn't say they intended to make him the highest paid....they said they made him an offer that would make him the highest paid.

Now that was a couple of weeks ago, the number has changed we'll see if they want to move off the current offer or not.

I would not pay it. If that is the demand, I would trade him.
I would not trade him T, he is STILL under contract for some ridiculous number like $5MM.

I'd offer him the same contract or a little more so he can say he's the top paid guy at the position and if THAT doesn't satisfy him let him play out his contract and let him leave THEN.

BTW- If it's true that they have the same agent, then it is in the AGENT's best interest that he signs Gonzo to the EXACT same deal as Witherspoon. Because if he gets more for Gonzo, Witherspoon is going to want to know why HE didn't get that money. Either way it's a lot of ****ing money and they are both set for life (if they are marginally smart) the day they get their signing bonus check.

Interesting if true, but a CB1 is not equal to a WR1. I don't know why they would think it would be. The difference is the elite WR can play away from the CB if they would to usually. There are ways around permanent 1v1 coverage. and your CB1 becomes much less valuable on the WR2 typically. So yes... elite WRs are worth more usually. It is the same reason elite pass rushers make more than elite LTs... Oh your LT can maybe shut me down? Watch me go somewhere else.

I was wrong on signing bonus. Per NBC:

Here are the full terms of the four-year extension (six-year contract), per a source with knowledge of the terms:
1. Signing bonus: $26 million.
2. 2026 base salary: $1.145 million, fully guaranteed.
3. 2027 option bonus: $24 million.

4. 2027 offseason workout bonus: $250,000, fully guaranteed (but must be earned).
5. 2027 base salary: $3.061 million.
6. 2027 per-game active roster bonus: $850,000 total, fully guaranteed (but must be earned).
7. 2028 offseason workout bonus: $250,000, guaranteed for injury and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2028 waiver period (but must be earned).
8. 2028 base salary: $15.9 million, guaranteed for injury and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2028 waiver period.
9. 2028 per-game active roster bonus: $850,000 total, guaranteed for injury and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2028 waiver period (but must be earned).
10. 2029 option bonus: $9 million, guaranteed for injury and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2029 waiver period.
11. 2029 offseason workout bonus: $250,000, guaranteed for injury and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2029 waiver period (but must be earned).
12. 2029 base salary: $14.9 million, guaranteed for injury and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2029 waiver period.
13. 2029 per-game roster bonus: $850,000 total, guaranteed for injury and fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2029 waiver period (but must be earned).
14. 2030 offseason workout bonus: $250,000.
15. 2030 base salary: $23.2 million.
16. 2030 per-game active roster bonus: $850,000 total.
17. 2031 offseason workout bonus: $250,000.
18. 2031 offseason roster bonus: $3 million.
19. 2031 base salary: $28.6 million.
20. 2031 per-game roster bonus: $850,000.
The four new years have an average of $33 million per year. The total payout, including a training-camp roster bonus of $3.949702 million, is $158.255 million. That equates to an average from signing of $26.38 million.
The payout for the first two years, including the training-camp roster bonus, is $59.255 million. The two seasons are fully guaranteed at signing.
The third year vests in the days after the 2028 Super Bowl, and the fourth year vests in the days after the 2029 Super Bowl. The injury guarantee at signing is $101.255 million.

I don't think it was a mistake by Kraft at all. I think it was intentionally done. The Patriots and Gonzo have been trying to keep this thing a cold and civil. Gonzo hasn't really 'held out' and has been at practice. When he has sat out he has mostly had the team's okay and they have called it an injury (not specified) to avoid him getting fined. The Patriots on their end have not made a fuss about him missing non-mandatory things. And Kraft stepped up to the plate to make a public statement of intention.

I think all of this was very carefully planned. Like ongoing moves to keep everyone at the negotiating table happy while they are in a holding pattern.

Four years 132M, 101 GTD over 4 years. approx 33M a year. Gonzo is probably getting 140M 106GTD over 4 years. Just a guess.
Why 140? Why not 133 with 102 guaranteed? It makes him the highest paid CB.

By the end of this season Gonzalez will have been paid somewhat north of $15 million. He should be set for life already if he’s been careful with it. But he’d have to be frugal to live the rest of his life on just those savings. The next signing bonus will be the life changing money, where he will no longer need to be frugal.

In theory, yes I agree. However, it’s actually more so about the entertainment value of each respective position. Both WR & pass rushers provide the consumer (we, the fans) as well as the casual viewer a more exciting/pleasurable experience due to the skill level & highlights. LTs & CBs; not so much. All money (345 Park Avenue) driven.

Interestingly, no mention of a signing bonus.
Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon got his new contract on Saturday. And we’ve gotten the full breakdown of the deal.

Here are the full terms of the four-year extension (six-year contract), per a source with knowledge of the terms:

What I find frustrating is that people have been trying to make this contract negotiation for an EXTENTION of a contract that has 2 more years to run into a confrontation, when it's been exactly the OPPOSITE of that. Now that he has one of those "if it were a real game he would play" injuries, he is suddenly holding out or in or whatever.

My guess is he will have a deal by the time the eagles arrive in Foxboro and this will go down in history as "much ado about nothing. Full of sound and fury, signifying...NOTHING". (with a nod to the Bard)

That's a reasonable correction. I was thinking in an unnecessarily binary manner: either you trade him or you pay him...now. I suppose the argument against carrying him on the cheap would hinge on whether if retained on that basis he might deliberately make himself more trouble than he is worth, one way or another. I do not know his character well enough to guess, but certainly all indications as to his character have not been glowingly positive.

Kraft has already committed, very publicly, that he is offering Gonzo a contract that makes  him the highest paid cb of all time.
Which he should be. Kraft can't walk that back now.
This deal should be done very soon
No. Kraft said he had made an offer which as of the making of the offer would have put him highest. Kraft is a smart man: he would not have been so foolish as make such an open-ended promise vis-a-vis a number - Witherspoon's contract - which was not yet knowable.

He can indeed "walk back" from a statement, a promise, he never made.

More broadly, the ongoing accusation in some quarters that Kraft is cheap is asinine, erroneous, and more than slightly fishy given the sad history of his tribe.

How so to his character?

I disagree. I understand he wanted Gonzo to know how much he was valued.
But dont make a public statement and minimize any leverage you might have had.
Kraft could have quietly just told Gonzo in private of his intentions.
