Pats Number One AFC Points against Defense

Number two in NFL behind only Vikings. For some reason it does not feel that way to me but still.

Love it. Some people and media look too much at yardage. In today's NFL most teams are going to give up a lot of yards with all the rule changes.

Tannehill, Assweiler, Tyrod Taylor, and Kessler/Whitehurst in there. They did do a good job throughout against the Cards but they haven't really faced a murderer's row since. So it's hard to know EXACTLY where they're at right now. Still, the defense was solid last season and has that potential again this season. Hopefully Nink can add to the pass rush because that's been the only real area that has been absent on a more consistent basis thus far.

He didn't add anything to it today.

First game back and recovering from injury. Past history says he should add a dynamic to it once he gets back up and running at full speed.

i think it was pretty clear that the gameplan was to stuff the run and let the Brown's crappy QB squad try to beat the Pats through the air - they couldn't.

i think its a fair conclusion to state that the pass rush wasn't a point of emphasis for this game.

I wanna see how our defense does the next couple of games. Let's be honest the browns stink.
yes. Also, we really have not played any body this year too scary. My thought was though, with Brady back and us scoring 30 or more, the Defense will actually be able to focus more on one dimensional offenses who are trying to come back. giving up 14.7 points a game "should" be great for a team with this offense.

Need to do a better job in the redzone though. It's like every time the opponent gets down there it's seven.

True, but it is 5 games, and you cannot help who is on your schedule. It will be like a batting average, let's see how good it is after 19 games this season. In 2003, the 16 game regular season was number one, with an average of a point or two less given up then where we are right now after 5. I think we kill Cinci at home. Let's see what happens with the Steelers. I hope the Bills drop a game or two before we play them. I don't want to be just one game up with a loss to them already when we play them. I'm sure we will destroy them like 38 - 13 anyway.

Who we've played is definitely a factor, but I also feel like historically our defense gets better as the year goes on (barring major injuries). So I feel like as the competition gets better, so will the cohesion of our defense.

Yeah, that #1 in the NFL running game of Cleveland went wild yesterday didn't it? No setting the edge, no stringing out the play to allow LBs and back end players to clean up. No pressures flushing the Cleveland QBs into other players. None of that occurred yesterday...right Marqui?

The stat obsessed will never understand team football nor grasp how the parts integrate into the whole.

If DL don't get sacks and CB/S get picks, people erroneously think they stink. #1 scoring defense in the AFC and people still aren't happy.

This I will agree with. The attitude and edge has been blunted by the situations this team has been in so far where they've had to keep everything in front of them, don't give up the big play, allow short completions to keep clock running, etc. It is very difficult to "turn the switch" from playing passive, conservative, milk the clock to attacking, aggressive in your face.

That said, if the opposing team can't even GET to the red zone...

Preach!

Let me help you with this one...

It's not "#1 Points Against" Defense.

It's not "#1 Scoring" Defense.

It's #1 Defense.

Anyone who gives any heed to the asinine notion that Yards outrank Points ~ there are many ~ is an Idiot.

As do the Texans and Dolphins right now. The jury is still out on the Cardinals.

I haven't been as impressed overall with the D as I wish. There have been so many missed tackles especially in the past two games. How many coverage breakdowns did they have yesterday? They're lucky that the Browns were down to their third QB. I thought they were going to have to pull someone from the stands at some point. But seriously, points are really all that matters. However, you'd like to see a defense with this much talent be a bit more consistent for a full 60 minutes, no matter the score.

I have not had big complaints about this D. I think they are doing pretty good but all that being said i don't believe there is only 1 unit better in the NFL than ours. Also the Pats are #4 in PPG I think in the NFL.

I would take the Denver D, Vikings D Eagles D and Seattle D over ours. Arguably Baltimore too but that is closer and personally after seeing theirs 5 weeks i side with our D.

That being said i think the D on the whole has played well and the good news is we know the main 2 issues it has. Red Zone D and lapses for stretches. Since those 2 issues are so glaring it means fixing them is possible as the problem is known so they have room to improve fairly easily which is good.

This also has never been a defense that beats up on poor teams and struggles against good ones.
By and large the biggest complaints about the D are always how many yards they allowed to bad QBs, while winning, or how many points they allowed with a big lead in blowouts.
It is consistent with the philosophy. They are not going to try to sell out to exploit a weakness, and thereby give a strength a better chance to beat you. These are all NFL players, and if you dare them to beat you they will have some success, but if you put it in the hands of the weakest player/unit, while they will have some success they will not have enough to beat you.
The goal is to win.

I don't care about stats. Only care about wins. I don't care if the defense gives up 70 points, as long as the offense scores 73. Wins is all I care about. This defense may lead the league in fewest points against per game, but it's not a defense that scares teams. Like Denver last year and Seattle 3 years ago. I want a defense like that.

That being said, I don't think this defense has played up to its potential yet, I think it can be a top 10 defense at worse, top 5 defense at best. Defense wins championships, hopefully they become dominant.
