This is the most brilliant move I have ever seen. This better then brilliant, it is inspired.

How do you teach a player what his real value is, let him try the waters. Since it is dependent upon finding a trade that would work with a the Patriots, they can always decline and keep him on the roster.

He wants to be paid market value, see what the market is willing to give him.

Not only that, now the ball really is in BRANCH's court. No more BSing the media through his agent. The Patriots have put the ENTIRE weight of the situation on Branch. He will end up where he WANTS to be. If he wants to be in New England, he will be. If he wants out, he will be gone.

I wonder if anyone will grab him up probely the jets or miami or mabey even cleveland who do you think will bite.

The Patriots have to approve the team he goes to. Something tells me he is not going to an AFC East team unless they pay more of a premium over a team out of the AFC East.

My head is reeling. The front office is caving to Branch?
Somebody help me out. Let's assume he's successful in signing with another team....what is the financial impact for us?

None he still owes the team $$$. but his salary was supose to be around 1.5M im not sure of the exact amount.

A brilliant tactical move by the Pats.

Look, things were at a complete non-communication impasse because of the positioning by Branch's agent. Now, there's a SHORT fuze for Branch Inc. to come up with a trade. Remember, the offered trade must have substantive value to the Pats. It will help establish Branch's value along with the $ amount of the contract offered by the other team(s) {if any}. After, as I expect, no trade occurs, follow on discussions can resume without either party appearing to have caved on the impass.

And maybe a bluebird will fly in in the form of a trade too good to pass up. Don't hold your breath.

EDIT: Dragon posted the same thoughts while I was typing

I think it's all about leverage for the Patriots. It's akin to saying, if you want to mess around, then fair enough, lets see how you feel about being dealt to the 49ers or another non-contender. It's a make or break time for Branch.

This is Economics 101, letting the market set the price...and we all know majored in Economics in college...

I believe Mr. Branch's bubble is about to get burst.

This is a good point, and may be exactly what the Patriots are up to. It's not as though many teams out there have quite the cap room that the Pats do, particularly to fill that big a hole (moneywise) at WR.

I also like the September first clause. So he does not really have time to brow beat anyone. It is a week on the auction block and see who bids.
I hereby retract my previous "WTF?".

This is EXACTLY what I am thinking. Maybe he will see his real value and understand that what the Pats are offering is more than fair. And if some team chooses to overpay him (which could very well happen), then the Pats will get very high compensation for him.

Psychological ploy by the Pats to show Branch that he's not worth what he thinks he worth. Given the limited time frame that has been granted, I think they're putting the squeeze on him.

If the player is going to be displeased in this team the best thing he is than he is fence.

this is football not a baseball waiver system. Branch is under contract for about 1 mil. we have so much room under the cap there is no financial impact. this would be a trade, not waiver.

Gee, Professor Clayton, what was that about the deal getting done and Branch was going to be a Patriot?

the only way I see that working for us is a number 1 reciever in return. Dont expect other teams with that price or a number 1 pick to bite so kinda like when they put Manny on waivers no takers and he will be on the field against the Bills.

Brillant! (Channeling the Guniess Guys)

Everyones roster is already set, no way anyone offers him anything close to what he is asking for, in addition to the first round pick that the Pats are going to demand for a Superbowl MVP.

This gives him a week to workout a deal, and then when he can't he has nothing but losing money and holding out.
Without a new contract and with the fines intact.

Of course the Titans might make an offer, because they can't seem to get their WR on the field, his name escapes me.....

Lelie had to pay Denver almost $1million to leave

I would assume that Branch would need to fork over whatever prorated bonus money to the Pats if he were to leave. Lelie had to pay Denver according to various news sources.

I also think this is the "get in" or "get out" ultimatum to Branch & his agent.

It will force his hand and squarely puts the burden on him to prove that he's worth what he thinks he is.

Wow.

Well, if nothing else it may help define Branch's value, sort of like how the Patriots like players to seek out a deal in free agency and then they try to match it. Maybe if no one is offering much more than the Patriots are, Branch will cave.
I think this is spot on!

Interesting to me that they have given the permission only for one week. Perhaps they are saying to Mr Chayut, "your employer can't seem to get you to do your job, so let's see if we can help. you've got one week to do some negotiating and find out how much your client is really worth. let us know what you find out." While this is surprising, it's a good move by the Pats. Both parties now can find out what he's worth on the market. They are not obligated to make a trade even if the agent finds something.

Let's not forget, two things have to happen. The trade team has to come up with a contract that Deion likes and accepts, and THEN they have to come up with a trade package that we like and accept. Remember the situation with Abraham and the Jests, he had a done deal with somebody (Seahawks?) but the Jests didn't like the trade so they refused.

I agree...the squeeze...SO Mr Branch you are worth how much?? Seek a trade then my friend...see what your value is?? I agree this really puts all the onus on The Twig..you have a week to get a trade done IF you really wish out of here...if you wish to stay?? Get you act together and get into camp...NO fence sitting.. This certainly forces the whole situation..Can't keep mouthing off in the press what he wants..LOVE IT!! My question is, what becomes of the fines?? He pays the Patriots as well??
