This is one of my pet peeves about reporters making these kinds of comments, and I generally like Lazar, who is a hard working guy who puts in the film time during the season. But in this case, it was a T-shirt and shorts practice on day one. Why anyone would make a comment on where someone lines up is beyond me. Plus the kid is still in a no contact jersey.Don't we have enough Strong Safeties here already?
Second, and probably more important, this is going to be a very FLUID group at the 2nd and 3rd levels this season. Things are going to change week to week due to match ups and there will be a lot of sophisticated disguise packages that will be put into place as well. This is all designed to make it hard for QB's and receivers to identify positions and coverages pre snap. As the physical characteristics between LB;'s and SS's seem to differ, where SS are getting bigger and LB's smaller and faster It is going to he very interesting (at least to me) to try and determine responsibilities based on where guys wind up post snap, rather than try and label them pre snap
So I wouldn't take much notice or care about labelling Mapu's position. Clearly he's there to be some kind of hybrid match up player filling a weekly role. In another era he'd be called a "cover LB" But in the end, I'm warming up to WHY he was brought in so early and what he could potentially do with his unique physical gifts and instincts, especially against the kind offenses we see these days. I would suspect to see more Mapu types to get significant roles around the league over the next few years.
