Patriots Sign Gerard Warren

Since you can't be over the cap for even a second I'm beginning to wonder exactly where we are and how we got there...

If you're just bringing in guys on vet minimums, it doesn't cost you much in terms of cap space, as the cap only counts the top 51 earners currently.

When you sign a guy at vet minimum, you get vet minimum benefit, and a cap charge of around $500k.

If the guy you bumped off the bottom end of the list of 51 also has a $500k cap charge, then the net effect is zero.

Glad to see Warren back as I felt he played pretty good last year. And I feel pretty comfortable with him, AL, and Vince in the 3-4 or Him, Vince, and Ellis.

It does scare me a little as it relates to the DL on the pup or who have missed the last few practices (Wright and Haynesworth).

If Ellis really cost $4+ million...how are we doing this all under the cap, even with exemptions...without having done the restructuring we thought we might do.

I'm banking on Clayton being wrong. Which is actually not an unreasonable thing.

Given all these signings came after last Thursday, it feels like either one or both of Chad and Albert restructured their contracts then and we created room.

I'm wondering more whether the d-linemen on PUP are now projected to stay there a while....

Indeed. Hurt, out of shape, or soon to be cut, the immediate future isn't looking especially bright for those guys. I'd almost rather they stay on PUP then get waived, though. Is that inhuman? Hoping for injury? Yeah, that's probably slightly evil of me.

Warren did a pretty decent job for us last year. Behind Wilfork and Wright, he may have been the best of the big boys up front. Unfortunately, it probably means the younger options haven't really shown much.

Good to see some competition!

We don't have enough DLs yet

Then at the end of pre season BB will hold an auction for those not making the roster. Think there will be some incredible competition going on along the DL the next 3 weeks. I would have LOVED to have seen this happen in a year when 2 a days, actually meant TWO a days.

Thanks for the incite, it helps to the urge to cry out WTF a bit. BTW- I wonder what would make GWarren want to come back to a team that was SOOOOO loaded on the DL.....UNLESS.....
I guess there's no such thing as too many defensive linemen, or too much competition.

Regarding the salaries and cap space, whoever ends up being cut will cost the Pats nothing more than his signing bonus. Not only will I not be surprised if a relatively high-priced well known player gets cut by the Pats, I'm expecting for exactly that to happen.

confused

2 ppl must suck for these moves to happen

I'm thinking Brace's days are numbered...in the single digits.

Deaderick?

Lord knows who else. I'm worried that Cunningham is a bust. Reiss's reports from camp are not at all encouraging. He's just a guy, apparently.

Actually, from what I've been reading, Moore is killing it. Cunningham, not so much.

I would love to hear that but ive read Moore has been sucking too.

Do you have a link possibly? No biggie if you dont, im just stuck at work and have limited searching ability.

Can't wait till Anthony Pleasant is brought in

Quick, Floyd, can you get me a list of every free agent defensive lineman over 30? Put a star next to the ones who were first round draft picks in the '90's.

Belichick: "Wheres Warren Sapp these days?"

Caserio: "Bill he's been retired for a few years now and is on the NFL Network as a host"

Belichick: "So your saying theres a chance...."

It seems like someone is injured and we need added depth.

I'm not at all surprised. Glad to see him back.

I am fearful of an injury.

could all this spending be an indicator that Merriweather is out of here prolly w/ Brace, Cunningham, Deaderick Butler and whoever else?

Let's hope Fat Albert is healthy and not injured....Wilfork and AH make this DL special.....:rocker:

Could be that Albert is not working out? I don't know, but that is a quick $5mil off the cap.

We shall see.

You're a mind reader

Idk see what this has to with Butler and Cunningham is only going into his 2nd year.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Brace, Pryor and Deaderick have all played their last games as Patriots. In any case, I'm always all for camp competition. Whoever makes the roster at DT will sure as hell have earned their spot. I really don't see how signing warren affects Moore and Cunningham, though. They're totally different types of players. And I would be shocked if Cunningham was cut. He was solid last year as a rookie at a position of need. He's going into his second season, and he has a good deal of talent.

If this is injury-related, I would probably look to the guys who are already on the PUP first. Brace in particular, since he has at no point demonstrated the ability to stay on the field.

if Brandon M is traded we save $1,200,000 of cap space
