Patriots Rumor Patriots shopping Ben Watson?

A report indicating the Patriots are potentially in the market for this player, or have expressed or plant to express interest.

My view of Watson will always be colored by the fact that I desperately wanted Karlos Dansby at #32 in 2004, and we took Watson instead. Dansby went #33. Oh, what could have been.

I think the contract year comment is right on. If Watson thinks he's going to get big money (and someone may be dumb enough to give it too him), then he's gone, so why not get something for him.

and in the 2006 draft we could of had Thomas Howard a realy good LB for oakland but we treaded up to get chad jackson oh will you win some you lose some lol

This is from a somewhat obscure source, for what it's worth:

this more than backs up our report that tight end Ben Watson is on the trading block.

This sounds like speculation as much as report. Not sure what the source is, or if it's reliable.

It doesn't "back up" anything, but it's reasonable speculation. I have no problem with his play, he's an average tight end. I certainly would have a problem signing him to big money as his play has never lived up to his measurables.

This brought back memories of that draft...... Bad memories!
I wanted Dansby in this slot also.... Thanks for reminding me Mayoclinic!

Hence the question: why would anyone give Watson big money? Unless they need someone for the DB tip drills? What can the Pats get for him?

We still have some luster and he has been our starter for a while. teams are aware of his physical gifts, so who knows?

I will say the guy manages to get open. He gets no YAC and gets out fought for the ball by 180 lb. corners though, and that's not a TE.

The only way Ben's value could be any lower right now is if we had drafted a TE. This makes no sense.

No. It's common sense that he'd be available to anyone who wants him, regardless of this rumor - everyone assumes he's available.

And it may be common sense that the price would be a conditional draft pick - making it a win win for everyone...

i.e. the Patriots would have an interest in having him go to a team where he has the best chance of being productive and earning them a higher draft pick... that works well for Watson as well, being in a contract year on a team that has a lot of receiving options ahead of him... and it works well for a team in need of another receiving threat who could try him out at low to no risk, hapilly giving up a higher draft pick if he does very well.

So I view this more as a statement of common sense more than a rumor that someone started.

- a win win for everyone if Watson goes to a team where he'd do well in a contract year, giving that team the option to try him out at low to no risk, and giving the Patriots something rather than nothing if they don't have a high interest in re-signing him.

We get it already. You hate Seymour, you hate Watson, you hate Maroney... you're starting to sound like a broken record.

You might want to try this:

I remember most people on this board wanted Dansby and was really disappointed the Pats took another TE in the 1st round when they already took Graham in the 1st round in 2002. To this day, I think it was a pretty pointless pick and Watson is proving each and every day why that pick in the first round was unnecessary. Granted, I gave Watson a chance after finding out he can run a 4.4, bench press 500+ pounds and the praise he received from many people in his first training camp. While he has shown flashes, he doesn't seem to have the trust from Brady to get the ball on a consistent basis. Obviously, the tipped balls are really irritating and unfortunately it's the first thing we think about when we hear the name "Ben Watson". Ben really needs to work on that this off season.

While he is a good LB, I don't think he would fit in a 3-4 scheme. He's too light to play either inside or outside.

A few more Patriots player hates and suddenly you're a Jets fan or something.

Because they're not REAL Patriots. Real Patriots never get injured.

Ben Watson should have been a force with his measurables - instead we got a TE who was an okay blocker, a decent pass catcher who bizarrely seemed to attract more than his fair share of poorly thown balls by Brady (ones that he'd invariable pull a circus move to touch then bat up in the air for the defence)

Ben Watson is a great example why one should draft football players, not physical freaks with a ton of potential. Tons of players have potential.

That's great. He hustled once and made a highly viewed defensive tackle on Champ Bailey. That says nothing about his ability to play tight end.
Do you think he was worth a 1st round pick?

I've always wondered in that play if he could have ripped the ball from Champ's hands and ran it back upfield.

He's not what you'd ideally want, but considering that a) he was the last pick of the first round, and b) he's been a serviceable starter for 3+ years, I wouldn't call it a bad pick by a long shot.

i'll call it a bad pick

Meaning he was the 32nd overall player taken out of all of college that year.
He was a bad pick.
Raw, high potential players are worth fliers on in later rounds, not with high picks.
