I like the makeup of your roster. One thing you need to know about the PUP. If you've had one practice, you aren't eligible. The PUP is for guys recovering from off-season injuries that haven't healed. Once you practice, you are not eligible for the PUP even if you get hurt.

Yeah i've watched Solderking get beat over the head with the PUP eligibility requirements so many times that i'll probably take that information to my grave

Edit: I see what you are saying now. I didn't realise the Pats picker website autoassigned PUP players

- I think Koutouvides beats out White for ST LB position.
- Lee Smith cut isn't that big a deal for me. If we want a blocking TE with bad hands we'll just call Crumpler.
- I think Bellichick might stash Brandon Tate on IR. Also thinking Wright and Wendell will be on IR.
- Hoping for Thomas Austin, Landon Cohen, Jeff Tarpinian and Buddy Farnham to make it to our PS.
- Sammy Morris unfortunately will be cut but will also be on speed dial.
- I'm buying into the Spikes drama and think he'll be on the 53 but probably won't see a down in 2011 and will be cut when the season is over with. Waste of a roster spot but necessary.

Didn't mean it to be condescending. Just didn't want you to get beat up over it. They used to have an IR where you could activate a player if he's put on it after 6 weeks. I would like to see a 2-3 player limit on it and brought back. Too many coaches just stashed players on there who weren't hurt. Ironically, Pats were fined a 3rd round pick for doing that back in the Ron Meyer does. He really was a douche. At SMU, then with us.

OFFENSE
You have a 26th position on offense, the 4th TE. I suspect that if we go this way, Mills might very well be the 4th TE, since he can also play fullback. We no longer have a fullback if Connolly starts and Morris cut. Also, Wendell is injured, and could be waived if he isn't ready, allowing Morris, or another, to make the 53.

DEFENSE
As always, the search is for the missing. I think that Gerard Warren will make the team. He did a reasonable job as a starter last year. It seems unlikely that he is no good enough to be the 8th DL this year. I suspect an injured player will the last "cut" from this list.

I read the roster prediction guys... not every post talking about your reactions to it. I am reading a few now and see that it was mentioned

It's considered polite to read others' opinions before without forethought blasting your own

That said we all "miss" something said previously but not usually when it's repeated in the short thread you're posting in

Here's my crack at the roster after final cutdown:

QB-(3) Brady, Hoyer, Mallett
RB-(4) Green-Ellis, Woodhead, Ridley, Vereen,
WR-(6) Welker, OchoCinco,Branch, Price, Edelman, Tate
TE-(3) Gronkowski, Hernandez, Yeatman
OL-(8) Vollmer, Light, Koppen, Mankins, Solder, Connolly, Wendell, Maneri
DT-(5) Wilfork, Haynesworth, Ellis, Love, Pryor
DE-(4) Carter, Moore, Anderson,Cunningham
LB-(5) Mayo, Spikes, Ninkovich, Fletcher, Guyton
CB-(5) McCourty, Bodden, Arrington, Dowling, Butler
S -(4) Chung, Sanders, Brown, Ihedigbo
ST-(4) Gostkowski, Mesko, Katula, Slater

PUP- Brace, Deaderick, Faulk NFI-Cannon

Brandon Meriweather will be traded and many will be shocked at how little the Pats get in return. Mike Wright will go on the IR. I'm listing only 51 players leaving 2 places for players claimed off waivers for a look-see. Those players will be moved to the PS after week one and Gerard Warren and Tracy White/or Niko Koutouvides will be resigned or possibly Sammy Morris

The Patriots will have good luck getting players through waivers to the practice squad because the guaranteed money they gave some UDFAs will prevent other teams from claiming them.

Finally, if there is going to be a "Seymour Surprise" this Labor Day weekend, my guess is it would involve Wes Welker.

I agree with you about Koutouvides. I also think that if Tate isn't on the 53, that he'll go on IR. He's got a year left on his contract and he's cheap.

My version with no fullback and assuming Wendell is healthy enough to go, both of which I have questions about.

  • Slater yes, Tate no.
  • Yeatman over Smith.
  • Wright not healthy enough.
  • Warren as the luxury DL pick, over a young guy.
  • Koutouvides over White, but that's not based on anything in particular.
  • Meriweather and Sanders both stay, because we only have about 4 DBs who seem to be having solid preseasons (Chung and the top 3 CBs).

In essense, you have STers Niko and Ihedbigdo as your 52 and 53, and presume (for now) the health of Wendell and Spikes.

I'm fine with your 51, but am not in agreement with regard to your final 2 STers. I expect that injury status and new additions may end up making the final decisions a bit easier. As of this moment, I have White and Morris instead of your two. I can't see us with no fullback/short yardage blocker. Last year we had Connolly and Morris. Even Mills could be an option.

I can take it I'm a MAN!!!

***I just don't think about PUP eligibility and practice and the ramifications had of practicing once makes one ineligible.***

seriously though how often has this situation been as a big of a deal in the past versus this years team? We want to keep so much talent, but once you practice once you are unable to go on the short term pup.

If you don't think about it, here's a clue. Don't post about it.

PUP has ALWAYS been a big deal; it's not an issue that "unexpectedly" became important or relevant this season.

If you're saying that the guy who is actually useful on an occasional 3rd down has an advantage, you have a point. As for Niko vs. Tracy, I suspect that Niko is the more accomplished LB of the two, although I'll confess to not having looked into the matter further than Wikipedia.

I'm just nervous about our DBs.

It's discussed here at length every off-season. PUP is always important, whether the PUPpies are stars (Bruschi, Troy Brown) or more end-of-bench types.

I wouldn't go so far as to say don't comment about it like PWP suggested, but if you're unsure about a rule, just ask! There are plenty of people here that are more than willing to offer an explanation of just about anything football-related to those that would like to know more on the subject, or have it clarified.

The thread below is a great source for answers to any football-related questions that anybody here might have, and is a perfect place for anybody that has other similar questions to ask them. In fact, personally I think it should be stickied to the top of the first page.

My tough decisions:
- I cut Jermain Cunningham. Yeah
- I cut Meriweather. Hopefully in a trade.
- I agree with the hypothesis that Welker might be traded, but I've kept him on this 53-man. My thinking is that Edelman can play that role, and BB will take the draft pick for Wes if he can get it. If we trade Wes, his roster spot goes to Sammy Morris.
- The only other cut that I regret is Brace. But the players BB has stacked on the line make Ron obsolete. He's not a pro's pro, and pales in comparison to guys like Ellis, Haynesworth, Carter and Warren.
