Ian's Daily Blog - Albert Breer of the Boston Globe reported on Monday that the Patriots and first round draft choice Devin McCourty are already at work on a contract heading into next week's training camp.

Good news to me

One of the best news this offseason...always good to get the first rounder out of the way before camp.

Gawd I hate contract talk but it is really important to get the first signed as quickly as possible so that the others fall into line. Could be a very exciting camp and preseason if everyone is signed and ready to go at the start.

Hernandez is going to make the teams wonder about the 112 guys taken before him...

Dont get too excited. I read somewhere that Kraft is cheap. So i doubt this deal gets done anytime soon. He'll probably be a hold out like Brady

Negotiations are being held up by the option bonus; it is traditionally awarded in the 2nd year which in this instance is 2011, which understandably is a source of anxiety for the McCourty camp.

The same anxiety exists for this fan as well.. hope they resolve this contract soon, so many things can fall into place.

Given the quotes in Guregian's piece this AM it sounds like they have found a structure accommodation that suits the player and he is committed to being in camp on time, which is good. Rookie holdouts have impeded if not derailed many a promising career.

Simms will probably face some backlash from his peers for appearing so rational and positive.

Reading the link above I see that the option bonus is split between the first and second year, so what I said is not correct.
