Good stuff -- a testament to disciplined play and BB's coaching.

Penalty watch: Patriots at Ravens - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Key stat: Patriots have had two games without a penalty this year and one game with just one.
Most penalized Patriots: G Logan Mankins (7), CB Aqib Talib (7); CB Kyle Arrington (3), G Marcus Cannon (3), G Dan Connolly (3) WR Julian Edelman (3), DE Chandler Jones (3), LT Nate Solder (3).

Some team has to be the least penalized. Makes sense that a team with a strong coach, clear objectives and great discipline would be the least penalized. Though maybe a more aggressive defense style would lead to more penalties on that side of the ball.

Would you expect Detroit to have the least penalties?

The Patriots in fact set a league record for fewest penalties against back in 2008. . . . a year where, again, a disciplined approach was essential.

I can't find verification of that anywhere. Do you have a link?

But but but...Of course we know the REAL reason why this is the case!!!

It's because Brady gets all the calls!!!! And Kraft is paying off the refs!!! And the Pats cheat!!! And the refs are in Bradys pocket!!! And Belichick is Darth Hitler who plays mind games with the refs!!! He haz magik powerzzzz!!!! And the Pats CHEAT!!!!!! Spygate!!! Cameras!!! Unicorns!! Show Ponies!!! And and and...

/bitter, jealous, paranoid, conspiratorial, Pats-hater non-fan mode.

I was wondering about this just the other day because often this season in the 4th qtr or so I remember hearing the announcer say "and that will be the Patriots first flag of the day".

This just shows the discipline that BB demands from his players although some other fans use it as way to show that the Patriots get special treatment from the league. My uncle being one of them. He's a Dolphins fan and we've gotten in some pretty heated arguments before, this being one of his favorite topics.

Although the Ravens have been penalized many more times then the Patriots, the net penalties and yardage is very close.

Number of Penalties:
Patriots 58 (1st)
Ravens 97 (22nd)

Number of Penalty Yards:
Patriots 536 (3rd)
Ravens 803 (20th)

Number of Opponent's Penalties:
Patriots 95 (T-8th)
Ravens 109 (1st)

Number of Opp. Penalty Yards:
Patriots 814 (T-9th)
Ravens 1,062 (1st)

Penalty Differential:
Patriots 37, or 2.64 per game (2nd)
Ravens 12, or 0.86 per game (6th)

Penalty Yardage Differential:
Patriots 278, or 17.38 per game (2nd)
Ravens 259, or 16.19 per game (4th)

While the Patriots commit very few penalties, Baltimore's opponents commit the most.

This reason is because of 'Kyle Arrington pointless pass interference on 3rd & 25'.

The article stated that the only Pats penalty last week in Miami was against Dane Fletcher for PI. Wasn't the flag for kicking OB against Gostkowski a penalty?

Yes, that is a penalty and therefore it really should have been included. However, for some reason the official NFL stats don't include kickoffs going out of bounds as a penalty, even though it is included in their rulebook as a penalty. Maybe they don't include it because yardage is not marked off the way it is with other penalties like offsides or holding?

The way I look at it, it's a 20-yard penalty. The difference between where the ball is placed after a kick out of bounds (40 yard line) and where it a drive typically begins (20 yard line) after either a touchback or return is twenty yards. The rulebook lists the penalty as either thirty yards from the spot of the kick, or where the ball when out of bounds.

For everyone who complains that Brady always gets the call for roughing the passer:

The Patriots and Ravens have both had the same amount of RTP calls the past 2 years (2 per year)

Wanna know who is #1 the past two years for defensive pass interference beneficiary? ----->The Ravens averaging 20 yards a penalty.

For a fan base that whines perhaps the loudest of any in terms of how they never get calls (and how the refs supposedly always help the Patriots out), those stats are revealing.

  1. Ravens rank 2nd in fewest pass interference calls going against them (3), just one every five games. That's three calls in493 pass attempts, one every 164 pass attempts, or on 0.6% of all passes thrown.
  2. Ravens rank 2nd in fewest PI yards against them (38), or just 2.7 yards per game.
  3. To put those numbers in perspective, the median for PI calls and yardage against an NFL team is seven and 116; the Ravens are less than half the league average.
  4. Ravens rank 1st in most PI calls benefitting them (13); in contrast to the numbers above they get a PI call in their favor on 2.5% of their passes thrown.
  5. Ravens rank 1st in the NFL for the most PI yards benefitting them (272).
  6. To put those numbers in perspective, the median for PI calls and yardage benefitting an NFL team is six and 107; the Ravens are more than double the league average.

does anyone know if they ran the numbers to see how many penalties are called vs teams playing the pats and what the average number of penalities those teams get called for a game?

It would be interesting to see if maybe the refs stop calling things because mentally they see the patriots playing clean and feel like "oh gotta stop making calls or else things will look too lopsided"
