Interesting move, per Ian Rapoport:

From all accounts, he's primarily a special teamer who has had a tough time staying healthy. Needless to say, it's an odd addition.

He can help us...IF he can stay healthy...which unfortunately he hasn't been able to do since before he left college...

How can Belichick acquiring a special teamer ever be considered odd or out of character?
True - but the knock on him has been his injury history and since Belichick favors guys who tend to be "available" - and those issues are why Tampa seemingly parted ways with Cichy - that was what stuck out (at least to me) about this signing.

I was a fan of his coming out of college. He could do a little of everything but especially get after the QB as a LB. I had a 3rd on him but injuries just derailed his career so far. He was linked to us prior to the draft. We looked at him at his pro day along with Nelson and someone else.

Injuries aside, which seem to the only details reported, what does he bring to table? STer only? Or are there qualities that would help our D? Don't need a recap of his injuries...

He even missed most of two seasons in college due to injury.

Bucs selected Wisconsin LB Jack Cichy with the No. 202 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
Cichy (6’2/238) made only 11 career starts for the Badgers due to injuries, missing half of 2016 with a torn pectoral and all of 2017 with a torn right ACL. Cichy was a disruptive inside linebacker when healthy, tallying 15 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks over his final 20 games. Essentially this year’s version of 2017 Saints draft pick Alex Anzalone, Cichy is a known NFL-caliber talent with a worrisome lack of durability who could overachieve if he somehow gets better injury luck.

Just goes to show how much Bill loves ST.

I realize they have somewhat different responsibilities on defense, but I wouldn't mind seeing him replace Terry Brooks on the 53...He could step right into his role on STs too...

Special teamer? Check. Injury prone? Check. Probably someone Belichick "likes to coach"? Check! Sounds like someone BB would want to sign. Fits the profile almost to a tee. Hope he can do something with us, but with that injury history, superman wouldn't be able to overcome it lol.

BRB checking out the Tompa Bay Gronkaneers thread to see how those fans feel about losing this player

You’re right, Ian, but I think this has more to do with BB knowing his LBs are a weakness and throwing a dart on a player who could help if they get lucky. No risk or downside, worth a shot. A player gets bumped off the active roster but it’s not like they are really squeezed for talent this year.

What? Niko Koutovides wasn’t available?
I thought that Nico could maybe develop into a backup ILB/STer when he entered the draft, but by the time he arrived in Foxborough he had already shown that he wasn't even that good...Cichy if healthy has much more potential as a defender than Nico ever did...but that injury history...

All of those defensive pickups during 2011 stick with me unlike any other year for some reason. We were so desperate for help, and yet winning.

Antwuan Molden, Nate Jones, Sterling Moore, Niko, Tarpinian, Ross Ventrone about 8 different times...
