you know my friends i like a lot to tals also about the past where we were not dominant as today...

what do you think about Pat Sullivan ?

i think is considered so and so in NE area - should he deserve more or not so much ?

as far as i know, after Billy, he was the most important Sullivan and at the end it seems he was quite good

i remember the photo with his memorable 'fight' against the Raiders players at Oakland after our W

ok: yr reactions ?

grazie

Pat picked Ray Berry off the street, which started the Super Bowl run. That's one in the plus column.

well said also because imho he has been one of the best HC we ever had
(the best is the one we have today's)

plus or minus for him ?

Ray Berry was an awful coach, unimaginative and way too conservative. Zero and I mean zero literally innovation. Pat Sullivan was the 2nd dumbest son of Billy Sullivan. Chuck was #1.

I disagree with you. Raymond Berry had a conservative personality. Berry had 5 winning seasons out of 7 with the Patriots. He struggled through the loss of John Hannah and Bryan Holloway, a strike season, and an injury riddled 1989 year. I consider him to be one of the better coaches we've had in New England.

BTW, Berry was the receivers' coach for the Pats in the late 70's and early 80's.

As for Patrick Sullivan - his claim to fame is sticking his nose in Matt Millen's face after the Patriots divisional win against the Raiders. Sure it was dumb of him to gloat, but funny nontheless that he got under Millen's skin. I don't hold any ill feelings for Patrick at all.

Berry: Class act, HOF type player and good coach;

Observations of the Sullivan family (mostly positive) traits:

(1) Billy Sullivan: Lovable, successful, charismatic, bumbling, well-intentioned;
(2) Chuck Sullivan: Ambitious, serious, gullible, and also well-intentioned;
(2) Pat Sullivan: Fiery, likeable, loyal, bull-in-China shop-to-a-fault.

I respectfully disagree. Berry, was an excellent coach. He had the team play as a unit. He practiced the trivial things, like fumble drills, and stripping the football over and over, but his style made a difference. It won football games. He coached like he played, never leaving a stone unturned.

As for Pat Sullivan. I have nothing but positives to say about him personally. He cared to a fault. For the many of us fans that had the opportunity to meet him, he went out of his way to treat us with respect. Great guy. Nice guy. Classy guy. I wish nothing but the best for him.

Despite all the family's faults, Billy Sullivan jumped into the AFL and created the Boston Patriots. He even managed to get a stadium built albeit a poorly designed one.

For those reasons I will forever be thankful to the entire Sullivan family.

well said.
also from my side thanks to them.
without Sullivans probably no Patriots...i would say: surely no Patriots...

expecially credit to Mr Billy Sullivan ! Surely he loved the Patriots

This is a very true statement however, this was basically a loser organization during their tenure. You see it in all sports, some teams, no matter how many high draft picks, or great pick-ups, still lose! I think a lot of it comes from the ownership!

The Sullivan's should be given credit for giving the Patriots life, that's it.....

The same can be said about the Red Sox's former ownership and the Bruins current ownership. The Bruins will always be pretenders as long as the current ownership remains in place!

if i remember correctly i read an article or on the Herald or on the Globe approx 1 year ago and he still follows the Patriots and he is very happy about the success

ok...nothing special...

the history confirms that you are right but still i think that what they have done for the Boston Patriots and then NE Patriots is enormous

as far as i have read Billy Sullivan was the fan n.1

and probably this was the first mistake...

petty and sad anyway that they were unable to win a Super Bowl also if they had some opportunities (i.e 1976-1978 range plus 1985)

personally i have the maximum respect for them (again...without them probably we were not discussing anything on this board...)

sad also that they started with no money and probably it finished worst as we knows...

Agreed, however founding the Patriots was the Sullivan's saving grace. Bad drafts poor personnel moves, poor drafts, poor business dealings (Hee Hee), and haphazard crisis managemt (suspending Fairbanks in '78 just before the playoffs; selling the team and stadium separately, which almost undid the founding of the team) can be overlooked by the founding of a team that won 3 SBs in a 4-year period.

Raymond Berry was a good coach and a great WR. In the face of fan/media pressure, he went with Eason over Grogan in the playoffs and it paid off.

Under him, the Patriots...

Won in Miami for the first time since 1966

Won their first NFL playoff game

Until the Steelers won 3 road playoff games in the 2005 playoffs, the Pats had been the only team to do so in 1985

First SB appearance

Swept Miami for the first time (1986)

Twice tied the then franchise-best 16-game mark of 11-5 ('85 & '86)

Won their 2nd AFC East title, first since 1978

Had consecutive playoff appearances for the first time in team history

and what could have happened if on our First Super Bowl we did not found the Chicago Bears on our street ?
they were simply unbeteable imho...one of the best teams in NFL history...

bad that our loss was heavy and then we were in the game only a couple of minutes more or less (after 3-0 FG by Franklyn)

for me it was the first full game i saw of the Patriots on the italian tv (i still remember my emotion when i saw our players on the field - red uniforms and pat patriot logo that i loved - when we were 3-0 i started to dream...)

My brother and I went to TF Green Airport to greet the Pats when their filght arrived from LA and repeated the process after beating Miami. It was a great time.

Yeah that loss was heavy but fortunately it wasn't the worst in SB history. Thank you Denver!!! I knew the Broncos were good for something.

BTW, my ancestry is full Italian.

correct. when we lost with CHI it was, at the end, a real 'debacle'...
