Owners vote to trade compensatory picks but.....

I know we like to see conspiracies everywhere nowadays, but this makes sense. Since the criteria for awarding these picks for 2016 is already decided (free agents come and gone), you don't want to enact a new policy regarding them right away. Teams deserve the chance to factor this into their decisions to keep/sign free agents, no matter how marginal the impact may actually be.

I agree in theory but IMO having the ability to trade the pick provides additional incentive to letting the player walk. All the new rule does it allow the team to trade the pick.

With that said, the league has set the precedent to implementing new rules very quickly for anything it deems requiring urgent action.

However as it stands today, the Pats have a monumental number of quality players slated to be UFAs after the conclusion of the 2016 season. My point is that the rule going into effect is better late than never.

Ehh, why did you have to bring logic and reason to this thread ;p

Guess it's the same principle I run my fantasy football league.. can't make changes like turning on PPR or things of that nature after people have already drafted

It's possible that teams could have handled free agency slightly differently if they knew Comp picks could be traded

Oh well, this is something that BB will take advantage of 2017 and beyond, I think it will help the Patriots more than most teams.. just stinks the timing of it, we had a lot of comp picks coming our way

Might be 4. Revis, Wilfolk, Ayers and Vereen.

Browner too, but I think they cap it at 4

Here's a question, if you had 5 players leave and they all would calculate to a comp pick, but you can only have 4.. would they make 1 of the 4 better to make up the difference?

For instance, if we had four 4th rounders as comp, but 5 players worthy of them.. would they change 1 of the 4 to a 3rd rounder?

Where would we get three 3rd round comp picks?

Revis is one, who are the others?

3rd round picks are hard to get, I don't think an team has ever had two 3rd round comp picks in one year let alone three.

You may be significantly over rating the comp pick likelihood

Yea you're probably right

Revis is def a 3rd
Wilfork got like 4 million? Maybe a 5th or 6th
Ayers got 4-5 mil, 5th or 6th
Browner got 4-5 mil, 5th or 6th
Vereen got 5 mil, 5th or 6th

Sheard probably offset Ayers

Not sure what Castillas got or Arrington

I really didn't do much research on these numbers since I'm doing this from my phone lol

Just look at two things from the playoffs that were implemented for this season.

-Formations that the ravens cried about
-Concussion protocol based on the hit on Edelman

Two Patriot related things

This is clearly Patriots related because Pats have a few comp picks coming to them that could help them move up to the top half of the 2nd if they wanted to.

The concussion protocol was a result of Russell Wilson getting his brains scrambled and staying in the GB playoff game. The mediots on ESPNYFL were calling it Edelman related.

Speaking of Edelman, I was just on a Broncos message board and one of their fans was proclaiming that Edelman doesn't even belong in the NFL. It's difficult to take anyone seriously when they say something that stupid.

Still doesn't measure up to Colts fans.. they are the most bitter, ******ed people I've ever interacted with on a forum

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Indiots.

Back in my days as an AOLe there was one Indiot who came to the Pats board after 2002, thinking that the Pats SB win in 2001 was a fluke and that P6 had clear sailing to GOAT status. Boy was he surprised. He was so stubborn that he stuck around and took abuse during the Pats greatest run of all time in 2003-2004.

It was also during that time that one of my sons was attending grad school at IU and would constantly have stories about the ridiculous things that they would say to him when he would wear his Bruschi or Wilfork jersey.

However, my other son met and married a girl from Indiana, and she's a sweetheart.

I think the answer is no, but I am not sure.

The answer might be no for the Patriots and yes for everyone else.

No way is it 4 it's based on the contract signed and the only one that ranks like that is revis. My guess would be a third for revis a 5th for vereen a 6th for wilfork and a 7th for Ayers. Another poster mentioned sheard which will take either wilfork or vereen out of the equation.

To substitute facts for appearances, overthecap.com is a good resource for comp picks:
Draft - Over the Cap

This is based on the methodology developed by AdamJT13.

They are estimating the Patriots receive a 3rd for Revis (#97, with the Lions getting #96 for Suh), a 5th for Wilfork, a 6th for Vereen, and a 7th for Ayers. Brandon Browner (a 5th) is cancelled out by Sheard. Casillas and Ridley also could qualify but the Pats have hit the 4 player max anyway.

Chandler doesn't count because he was released by Buffalo. Arrington doesn't count on the other side because the Pats released him (as opposed to Revis, Wilfork and Browner where they declined options).

I don't trust the league, but I'm not going to assume their motivations were just to eff the Pats on this one, though I don't discount that as a possibility. Teams actions that already happened have determined the picks for 2016. Knowledge of the ability to trade the picks could have altered the actions some teams would have taken. IMO, it makes sense to implement the policy on a year when teams are aware of the true implications of moving on from, and signing FAs.

Making it a rule for 2017 is the right call since this does give comp picks added value so giving teams an off season to take advantage of this before it goes into effect is only fair.

Yea pretty convenient that the Pats may have up to three 3rd round compensatory picks in 2016..

Oh well
They'll get a 3rd for Revis, but none of our other free agent losses come close to qualifying for a 3rd round comp. I project 1 3rd round, 2 6th round, and a 7th round.

He voted for 2017 because he can't let our selfishness take precedent over the other 31. But, don't worry it's all part of the master plan to overthrow the league front office.

I'm pretty damn sure it wasn't "Would you rather start trading in 2016 or 2017?"

Exactly right. The owners likely got a chance to vote Y / N and not re-write the proposal.

But, its very likely that the pats being experts (under BB) at both crafting contracts to gain comp picks and trading picks figured into the delay.

I dont realistically see that the minimal value difference of a tradeable pick (to most teams: 50% execute essentially no trades) is going to make someone change their mind and keep a PI-machine-type cb (Browner) or not sign a sack-machine (Sheard) just cause. .... "oooooh, i could trade that pick". Give me a break.

If you eliminate the unlikely-impossible, the remaining option no matter how conspiracy-kook and NYJFL dirty-dealing it may be, is likely TRUE
