I could see them excelling for a time, but then it's reversion to the mean.
To break the mold, you need to have 3 things.
- Need an owner/management who knows when to get involved and when not to
- A coach who can do the whole job. Genius on one side of the ball, hires people to shore up any weakness, can handle talented personalities, can teach others, ...
- Franchise QB who can carry a team (or make them automatically 1-3 games better than they would be otherwise...)
Could make a case for a GM too being #4 (but could lump them in as management)
Patriots have 1, 2 & 3
New Orleans has 1, 2 & 3 (went from the Aints to Saints with Payton/Brees)
Dallas has had 2&3 plenty, but #1 keeps getting in the way
SF has 1 & 2, but didn't have #3. Thought they had #3, but got rid of #2 because #1 thought he knew better. Now, They probably have #3, and still have to see where they are on 1/2.
Browns, seems to have none of the above and not sure where they are today. Definitely making some good decisions in acquiring draft choices with a long term outlook. Have to see where it pans out.
