OT: Should the Super Bowl be moved to Saturday?

It seems like every year this topic comes up around Super Bowl time and is then forgotten.

I don't really understand why the NFL insists on keeping the Super Bowl on Sundays. Considering that we're now darn near into mid-February by the time the game is played, it's not like there's any college football still on. Having the game on Sunday night makes it difficult to have a really good time and still go to work the next day. Between people either not showing up or being in la-la land when they are at work, the day after the Super Bowl has got to be one of the worst days of the year in terms of productivity, especially when the game doesn't even start until 5:30 at night (where I live.)

I imagine the NFL will argue about tradition, but they don't seem to mind changing tradition when it suits them. IIRC, the early Super Bowls were played in the early afternoon until people on the west coast complained that the game was on in the morning there. Besides, between the playoffs and NFL Network games, there are a lot of games on Saturday nights each year.

Is there some reason they still play it on Sunday that I'm missing???

I completely agree.

People need one day to recover before returning to work on Monday.

As long as there is a 2-week break btwn. games, then there is no reason whatsoever not to have the SB on Saturday.

From a purely selfish point of view, I agree. The game starts at 11pm here, so I always end up taking the next day off.

I don't see anything wrong with playing it on a Saturday evening. It would help people who went to the game and would mean that fewer of them would have to take the Sunday off, for starters.

Another day in the SB city means another day of revenue for the city who hosts it and more money for the league,take away one day and you take away 10s of millions in merchandise sales in that city.

Here in Slovenia SB will start at 0.30 AM, but at 6.00 AM I must wake up for going to work, so moving SB to saturday will be very fine for me...
This year I have luck, cos 8th february is holiday in Slovenia...

Do you have numbers to back that up? If people were going to spend money on sunday they would of just spent it on saturday anyway.

thanksgiving is all ways on thursday. the super bowl is all ways on sunday. keep it on sunday. spend time with the fam and eat lot's of chicken wings lol

Saturday would make more sense and may even get more viewers, but they are still making money hand over fist so there's no obvious reason to move it.

Some people who are attending the game and are not working in the weekend would more likely stay in a hotel 2 days instead of 1 day and therefore much more apt to spend more money - more time spent in a city 99.9.% of the time equals more money.

Playing on Saturday would likely leave fans from out of town on the plane or bus early the next day (sunday) and not spending any more cash there,especially if thier team loses.

If saturday was the SB,It is MUCH More likely that a good portion of fans would come to the SB city on Friday night and stay till sunday afternoon then head home - Play it on Saturday and more than likely those fans are gone by the time the sun rises on sunday - leaving hotels and sports stores with a day less visitors and occupants.

You don't need inside information to figure that out.

There is just no way that you can get 50 million households to tune in for something on a Saturday night.

This would be a nightmare scenario for the restaurant industry.

Personally I would much prefer for it to be on Saturday, but as mentioned above, there's no way that is happening for business reasons. Cities bend over backwards to host a Super Bowl and spend a lot of money doing so. There are a ton of events in the week leading up to the game, and the day with the most pre-game events is Saturday. Push those events to a workday and there's that many fewer people attending and spending money. Play the game on Saturday and people are going to spend one less day spending their money in that city - many would fly out Saturday night rather than Sunday night, for example.
