OT: Reading this list gave me chills [merged]

No comparison.

We have reasonable expectations of a World Series, a Super Bowl, and the NBA Finals.

I'm glad he is so excited about the trades. Let's count the rings after they win.

The Celtics GM made a desperation move to save his job after failing miserably to assemble talent. He sold out the future for a shot at a quick fix. The Red Sox have pitching and are at least winning, but the GM has made some key errors in getting rid of Rodriguez for Lugo and Nixon for Drew. Hurt them defensively and especially at the plate. He jusst got rid of an effective starter for an(other) aging reliever coming off 2 surgeries. The line-up still lacks punch and nobody can be confident that they can compete against playoff pitching. What will he say when the Yankees take the lead in Sept, and when Ray Allen is on the bench with sore heels? meanwhile, the Patriots machine just keeps chugging along...

We had a pretty decent 12 months in Detroit. Tigers world series, Pistons and Wings both in the conference finals. Michigan playing #1 v. #2 to go to NC game. Not bad at all.

In addition to the Pats, Sox, and Celtics, the Revs are in first place and having an excellent season.

Great post; my thoughts exactly.

The Smelltics will have 3 over-30s, all on the precipice of physical breakdown, a 2nd-year PG with no veteran backup to teach him, a foul-prone C with no offensive game (and also no backup), and a garbage bench, led by Brian Scalabrick. All thanks (or No thanks) to Ainge, who has done a good job drafting, but an absolute shyte job trading; in fact, his Trading Average is .000.

Speaking of .000, how's Lugo and Drew working out for the dead sux? Lugo's hitting - or lack thereof - is a small surprise (his lousy defense isn't, however), but everybody and their grandmothers knew that JD Blew and Boston was, is, and will be a match made in hell. The blind, short-sighted arrogance of this organization of book-keepers is appalling. They have spent $25M/year on 2 players, and have nothing but 2 huge, gaping offensive holes in their lineup to show for it.

A pox on both these houses.

Talk about glass half empty.

Not that I necessarily disagree...

Giddy fans are cute, even when they are sportswriters, and I hope we see a NBA Championship and World Series. All I'm saying is that you cannot compare the current Celtics or Red Sox organizations to the magnificent "compete every year" organization Kraft et al. have constructed in Foxboro.

If you beat the guy in the gay sweater vest it goes from "pretty decent" to terrific.

Re: OT: Reading this list gave me chills

the mid-70's, my friend! the Havlicek/Cowens Celtics won titles in '74 and '76, the Don Cherry Bruins were in 2 straight finals '77 and '78, the Red Sox were Championship contenders from '75 thru '78, and the Patriots '76 thru '78 were as talented as any team in the NFL.

Maybe that's what spoiled us growing up in Boston. From '59-76, the city never went more than two years without a championship, either Celtics or Bruins and the Sox had '67. In the mid 70's the Bruins and Sox were good, leading to the 80's with Bird and the Pats in the Super Bowl....Then the drought until the turn of the century and we're getting spoiled again with three SB championships, a World Series title and hope on the parquet with yesterday's trade........

Re: OT: Reading this list gave me chills

i acually just refer to major league for that perticualr sport

Re: OT: Reading this list gave me chills

The red sox were the wild card i believe and the revs made the finals and lost i am pretty sure

on a side tangent can anyone else name the last professinal sports team in New engalnd (well technically 2)

Negative. The Sox did not make the playoffs in 2001 (or 2000 or 2002).

Nomar and Pedro both had injury problems that year.

Re: OT: Reading this list gave me chills

Captain Stone,

I live in the Philippines actually (Metro Manila). I used to go to Subic and Clark in the 80's to play basketball against George Dewey while I was in Middle School and High School. I got a first hand look at your Paradise Island during those days

Unfortunately the Philippine Congress decided to kick the bases out. A lot of people over here really didn't mind the bases because they provided a great amount of security (as well as a target for the Russians too!). Had the Phil. Congress not done that, I am sure there would still be US bases in this country, downsizing or not because of how strategic a location the Philippines is versus the rest of Asia.

Well, it is the right of a nation's elected officials not to renew our base leases, if they so choose. Still, it's too bad, given the history between the 2 countries since the Spanish-American War, and the fact that the Philippines is the only predominately Christian nation in Asia, and that English is spoken by so many there.

Keep the political discussion where it belongs...

A little history never hurt anyone! But yes I get your point. To reiterate Captain Stone's point however, saying please would have been a good idea, after all it's not like I have a previous penchant for stirring things up by adding a political point of view in other football discussions. This is the first and only one and it's about my country for goodness sakes!

The Shock are also WNBA champions, are they not?
