There is a significant difference between secretly looking for your next job when you are supposed to be preparing for the SB, and choosing not to accept a promotion. Parcells resigned, and BB didn't want the job.

Actually, he did choose the accept the promotion. There was a press conference, BB was at the podium, and he did say he was the NJ Jets coach. Then a week later, he had a press conference where he resigned. Then he was named HC of the Patriots.

You'd have to be a fool to think BB did not know that either the Patriots would make him an offer; or that they already had made him an offer.

And thats why we got penalized draft picks for it.

Now, you can say searching for a new job in the offseason is better than searching for one in the playoffs. But you can't say that BB was "choosing not to accept a promotion"

IMO there's a big difference between Parcells negotiating while prepping for a SB and Belichick changing his mind in the off season. If memory serves Belichick had allready been promised the position and accepted only to change his mind when Parcels agreed to stay on as VP of football operations. I think at that point Belichick was kinda sick of never getting any credit.
Another thing that pissed me of about Parcels is his reason he gave, as far as "shopping for the groceries". If it wasn't for Terry Glenn breaking the rookie record for receptions with 90 catches we never even sniff the SB that year. I actually hate Glenn for the way he was after 96, but for Parcells to use that as the reason after the season Glenn had at that point in time shows what an ass he was. If that doesn't take the cake he goes on to make a move for Glenn in Dallas.
I don't think Parcell is less then a great coach, I just think he's overated.
