HAPPY CAMPERS GREET MANGINI
June 4, 2006 -- HARTFORD - The first hint this was going to be a different kind of day came when a teenager politely called me "Coach."
I hadn't felt that kind of genuine respect since I asked my wife's parents for permission to marry their daughter - and that was watered down slightly by a bit of shock on their part.
The second hint this was going to be a different - special - day came when I walked into the Bulkeley High School gymnasium from the driving-rain quagmire outside and saw some 700 teenagers seated in an orderly fashion waiting for Eric Mangini's annual one-day football camp to commence.
They came from at least five states (including Vermont and New Hampshire) in buses, vans and cars, and there was nary a no-show because of the inclement weather. Some kids who could afford it paid the $45 fee. The more needy were there gratis.
Chad Pennington was there on his day off to help Mangini, as was guard Pete Kendall, who drove in with his son from Massachusetts. Erik Coleman was there, too, as were all of the Jets' draft picks except Nick Mangold, who had classes to take at Ohio State.
Mark Bavaro drove down from the North Shore of Boston to help. So did several Patriots assistants.
I'm missing many, many more people who volunteered their time to help run this event, the fifth annual camp to benefit the Carmine and Frank Mangini Foundation, named after Eric's father, who died when Eric was 16, and uncle, who became a father figure thereafter.
