OT: Fantasy Football is The Devil

This isn't a fantasy advice thread, this is a thread about how you feel Fantasy Football affects your Patriot fandom. It negatively affected mine, so I wrote this:

I think that the people that "enjoy their sports bigamy" are a much smaller part of fans then it is made out to be i have been playing for a few years now and i have never cared if so and so gets any TDs i just play for the fun of it

Every time there's a thread asking which team it makes sense to root for in a game (e.g. Jets-Dolphins or Broncos-Steelers), some posters always write in explaining how their FF rosters have determined their rooting interest.

Personally, I find that any tug of mixed loyalties takes away from my Patriots fan experience so I happily refrain from playing fantasy.

I think fantasy football and gaming gives people the misconception that they could do the job equally as well as what the paid professionals can. One move here another move there and everything is gravy. In reality, the world doesn't work like that.

To me, it's nothing more than a bit of fun to keep me interested in other games.

I'm playing and Drew Brees is my Fantasy QB. That said, I was still rooting against them in the game I saw a few weeks back.

It's fun, but has no impact on my Pats fandom. In fact, my team is homerlicious. I even have Brandon Tate on the bench just in case, lol.

I assume FF is what drives the glut of ticker stats during games? Call me old-fashioned and too easily irritated, but I miss the days when they'd just rotate the scores, which is pretty much all I care about. I hate having to run to other sources...

What I think is ridiculous is this idea of "Fandom". I root for 1 team, the Patriots. Other than that, I'm a fan of football. I personally find Fantasy Football as another way to enjoy the sport, it gets me involved and gives me excuses to watch stats, watch games, and root for teams/players.

I do keep Fantasy football in check, though. I have 2 Colt players on my team right now (Collie and Clark), but I put them both on the bench and looked for the best waiver wire pick-up for the week. I mean, it's really simple. If you don't want to root against your team, sit those players facing your team. No one is forcing you to start them. Heck, even if I had Peyton Manning on my team, I'd bench him this weekend, even if that meant settling with a Sexy Rexy QB. It's all about the fan.

Other than that line, I enjoy Fantasy Football. It's just something to keep you involved. Honestly though, I think Money might very well be the best reason to root for a team. "Fandom" doesn't really mean anything, putting your money where your mouth is, does.

Its like Madden football. Its just a game, its fake, but its about football. As a fan of the sport, i enjoy all things related to football

I've been playing fantasy football for over 6 years now and really enjoy it. I've never taken it serious (except when it's my team vs. my wife's team ) and as another poster mentioned, it's a good distraction. I did sit Dallas Clark this week, I try to do that when I can with regards to the Pats opponents.

FF definitely does lead to some awkward moments.

This week, I'm starting Peyton for lack of a better option. I'm going against the Pats basically. Opponent has Brady (who I tried to trade for a month ago when his value was lower), Moss AND Welker.

I'll happily take the loss for a NE victory, but I'd be even happier if Maroney scored 5 TDs on the ground...

It is just another football diversion, never get enough, Peyton is my QB.. not because I like him, but was best available player in the draft... there is so much still have to learn about the whole genre....

Between my obsession of the NFL and anything Patriots related, my wife puts up with it. Fantasy football would definitely put her over the edge. Besides, with kids, a house, a career and various outside activities how does anyone find the time?

I don't give a flying **** who is on your fantasy team and why you need them to score three touchdowns, it's the stupidest one-sided conversation in the world and every football party I go to there are three of you doing it.

I do not care about your imaginary football team!

I play it but its just a bit of fun. I doesn't come into my enjoyment of the real game and the reality of how important every game could be to the Patriots.

I despise people who come into a thread with comments about fantasy football. Surely there is a fantasy football forum somewhere to discuss just that if you so wish.

I've been in a FF league for many years now and it's just another part of my whole football fan experience. A few simple rules I've tried to maintain include always benching someone playing against the Pats, that way it doesn't take away from watching the game (just like I always take the Patriots with my weekly picks regardless of the spread, which of course cost me this past week with the line being 10 1/2...d'oh). Anyway, I think FF has helped me learn more about different players on different teams that normally I'd have no clue about. In addition it makes football a 7 day a week experience, i.e. setting my FF roster, making my weekly pics and the reading/research that goes into those, son's freshmen football games, friday night high school game, saturday college football games all culminating in Sunday's Patriots game, and of course NFL Red Zone for all those other games...geez, I don't have much of a life outside of football

Ladies and gentlemen, I present you Exhibit A: the key to what is wrong about fantasy football.

Even if playing just for fun, once you get wrapped up in it I'm sure it takes away from enjoying the game's team aspect. For instance, if you have Peyton Manning on your team and the Colts are playing New England, chances are you're going to feel lousy (or neutral) whatever happens.

For me it's not about rooting against my team per se -- it's about the constant refrains like "I want the Fins to beat the Jets, but I'm rooting for Keller to catch at least 5 passes along the way." I've found that rooting for stats rather than teams makes the whole thing a little joyless for me. Besides, I'm stats-obsessed enough as it is.

BTW, I certainly don't fault anyone else for playing and enjoying FF, I was just explaining why I don't. Purely personal preference. (Same story on betting -- I like to be able to enjoy every Pats victory without ever feeling pissed that they didn't make the spread or the over/under. But I know that many folks enjoy having a more tangible stake in the oucome.)

Interesting -- I wonder how many FF players do sit key assets when they're going against your favorite team? I have a strong suspicion you're in the minority, but I'd be curious to know for sure.

Feel free to enjoy or even obsess about your hobby. But please be aware that outside of your league, the status of your fantasy team is the most boring, masturbatory conversational topic imaginable and will make you a pariah at social events. It even cost Tony Kornheiser his job. Thank you.

See, I'm the same way. I actually do enjoy fantasy football. But what you need to happen does not matter to anyone but you and the 10 people in your league.

Announcing that you need Peyton Manning to throw 3 TDs to a room full of pats fans watching a game does not pass for football talk.

It's even worse when people **** up gameday threads with that ****.
