David Ayers is a 42 year old Zamboni driver & maintenance man for the Maple Leafs AHL affiliate the Marlies... AND on Saturday, he was the Emergency Back Up Goalie ... Every home team in the NHL has to provide one... and last night, Ayers was activated after the Carolina Hurricanes lost both their goalies to injuries...

For his efforts Ayers got $500 and was allowed to keep his game worn jersey...

btw, he and the Hurricanes won the game, Ayers allowing 2 goals, making 8 saves... Last night, 42 year old David Ayers became the old starting NHL Goalie to win his pro debut... How effin cool is that...

Kinda reminds me of Bob Gladieux

This was a really neat story! What an awesome experience for the guy!

Of course, I’m 38 and this just made me realize my dream of playing professional sports isn’t dead yet, either. Another 10 year window at least, right?

I saw this...lol

I've always said that hockey is a random game.

The Canes marketing people were certainly on it it immediately...

Ayres will receive royalties for the shirt and a (ahem) 'portion' of the proceeds will go to a kidney foundation.

It’s insane that’s a rule but I love it. Hope it never changes.

Thread title may as well be written in gibberish.

Please someone convince me this is real (as in not orchestrated) because the deeply cynical side of me is inclined to believe it was a PR stunt.

If it was a pr stunt, it woulda been the Rangers ... not toronto and carolina

Biggest takeaway is Toronto is, and always will be, a joke.

It's happened before. Just not somebody this old, but the other guys also typically have good stories as well.

Chris
