OT: Chargers Play-off hopes take huge hit

The Chargers have lost Shawne Merriman, but he isn't the biggest loss. Lorenzo Neal is. He's been a brute back there lead blocking for LT. His loss for the season will definitely hurt the Chargers run game..

Knee injury could sideline Merriman beyond Week 15

SAN DIEGO -- Star outside linebacker Shawne Merriman will miss the San Diego Chargers' home game against Detroit on Sunday because of a sprained ligament in his left knee.

Coach Norv Turner said Monday the injury isn't season-ending.

"I'm not going to speculate, but it could be a couple of weeks," Turner said a day after Merriman was hurt in the second quarter of San Diego's 23-17 overtime win at Tennessee.

With three games to go in the regular season, the Chargers (8-5) lead the AFC West by two games over Denver. The Chargers can win the division for the second straight season if they beat the Lions and the Broncos lose to the Houston Texans on Thursday night.

Merriman had two sacks Sunday to push his season total to 11 1/2. He's the sixth player in NFL history to get 10 or more sacks in his first three seasons; his career total is 38 1/2.

He had an NFL-high 17 sacks last year.

Quarterback Philip Rivers also has a sprained left knee, but anticipates playing Sunday

Rivers also was hurt in the second quarter, but returned to start the second half.

"It was pretty sore this morning, but it shouldn't be anything I can't manage and get better during the week," he said.

The team was reluctant to shed more light on the severity of the injuries.

Sigh. Eh, I'm not exactly prepared to dispute your assertion.

20 TO's is what it is. We don't turn the ball over 3 times in the 1st half against NE I think it's a different game.

Bottom line I do believe in Rivers. I'm not in a position to dispute what's obvious to almost everyone. That being the fact that he's not playing all that well. I do believe he's capable of playing better. I also firmly believe he doesn't have to play as well as TB for the Chargers to have a shot. But ya. He does have to play better. 1st and foremost he needs to protect the rock. If he can start doing that and raise his completion percentage I know for certain SD will be a better team for it. Whether that happens, and if it does, it will be enough remains to be seen.

Yea, you're right. The pro bowl is not the measure.

Bottom line w/regard to last season is that the pats won. I know this. But it wasn't as if you outmatched the Chargers and had SD beat on a physical level. It wasn't as if SD had no hope. There was hope. We outplayed you for around 52 minutes. Yup, I know. It wasn't enough.

SD managed to effectively pass that lesson learned onto the tits yesterday. I'm just saying it's all about the pursuit.

I guess Brady was so upset about the pro bowl he bounced back and is now having the greatest NFL season in history. Whats the over under Brady throws more td's this year then rivers does in the next three years. so far 45 td's and 5 picks. Rivers throws that many picks in a game!

Rivers is trash. A product of his running game and ultra talented players last year. Phillip Rivers mentioned in the same breath as Brady? BWAAAAAHAHAHA!!!
