I grew up here in the late sixties and started high school in the early seventies, and I can remember racing with my older brother to see who could get the Globe Sports page first every morning. Our very favorite was columnist Ray Fitzgerald-his combination of wit and information was nowhere else to be found-then or now. Peter Gammons had his baseball notes column, which was the best, and of course there was Will McDonough as well as others like Leigh Montville. I'm sure there were other great writers that I have forgotten to mention as well.
My point here, other than remembering those times, is that the Globe has come so far away from those days that it's almost sad. I cancelled my subcripton a number of years ago and only selectively read stories online-I'm so thankful for having Mike Reiss around-he's excellent--someone without an agenda who can be trusted for information. I'd love to see the Globe recapture those days again.
