I think Belichick wants to do it like the Chiefs with Smith but he will be forced to make the move much sooner. Unless he has a renaissance season Cam will have his meltdown fairly soon and that change will come. BB can tell everyone he gave Cam the chance with better weapons and he just isn't good anymore.
I would be more than fine with Mac sitting a little bit if our starting QB was not the corpse of Cam Newton.
His mechanics are ****, his decision making is ****, his accuracy is questionable. He is a great athlete who is not as dominant as he used to be. It is very depressing that he will be the starter. Not surprising, not necessarily the bad decision, but gosh it is not exciting. Can't wait for the 3-4 balls thrown in the dirt every quarter...
He’s not super Cam anymore he’s not even Cam Kent.
Best way to describe Cam is someone outmatched and can’t win a game can’t manage a game.
Damaged Goods.
Just saw a 53 where Gunner is Cut.
I get he’s had the drops but he gains separation and is a all world punt returner.
I think we can’t be letting go of WRs who can get separation and know our system.
But I could be completely off.
Gunner hasn’t been able to catch a cold but it can improve.
I think it’s becoming clear how the QB situation will go for the pats:
Week 1 vs. Miami - a top 10, aggressive pass defense
Week 2 @ Jets - bad pass defense
Week 3 vs. Saints an above average, aggressive pass defense
Week 4 - vs. Bucs a top 5, aggressive pass defense
Cam is going to blitzed early & often. Spoiler alert: the passing game won’t be successful.
Week 5 @ Texans - bad pass d
Week 6 Cowboys - bad pass d
Week 7 Jets - bad pass d
Week 8 @ Chargers - average pass d
Week 9 @ Panthers - mediocre pass d
Week 10 Browns - average pass d
Week 11 @ Falcons - bad pass d
Week 12 Titans - mediocre pass d
Week 13 @ Bills - above average pass d (zone)
Week 15 @ Colts - above average pass d (zone)
Week 16 Bills - above average pass d (zone)
Week 17 Jaguars - bad pass d
Week 18 @ Dolphins - top 10, aggressive pass d
The schedule is friendly for a rookie QB starting week 5. Can the defense & ball control offense get them to 3-1?
Was just listening to Lazar make a similar point. Weeks 1-4 (besides the Jets, probably) would be rough for a rookie but it lightens up significantly after that. It makes sense. Do they really want to throw Mac to the wolves, or do they leave that to Cam, let Mac watch the film after to see how these aggressive defenses handled their offense and learn from it, then give him a smoother on-ramp after the big Brady match? I think they can manage at least two wins weeks 1-4 with Cam if Gilmore comes back and they do focus on ball control and not letting Cam throw too many risky balls.

Team needs to get lean and mean. JJ can be the returner and contribute to run game. Don't need a one trick specialist when more depth is needed in other groups. Plus, he may clear waivers and end up in PS.

was thinking about that as well, somehow Cam has to survive until after the TB game, after that Mac can take over with a lighter schedule
and actually it doesn't matter what the record is, it would be only difficult to make a change if after the 4 games the Pats were 4-0 or 3-1, why would you change? no reason, your QB is winning in that case, everything else would be reasonable to make a change, especially with 0-4
and you avoid to put Mac in a bad spot with good defenses and the Media storm around TB game, no need for that, however not sure if BB really thinks that way
He's flashed pass rush potential every preseason game. For a third round pick to get cut as a rookie, he has to be absolutely dogshit in an irredeemable way. That didn't happen.
Depends on what your goal is and why you don't want Mac starting. If your goal is to win games and Bill thinks Cam is the best qb to do that right now, then you start Cam and you stay with him until he completely blows it, gets hurt, or the season ends. If it is to give Mac time to get better so you don't hurt his emotional growth then have him take the entire year off. I just haven't figured out the we will keep Cam for 4 games then throw in Mac, when has Bill ever done anything like that at any position before?

Haha, I mean, yeah, but at the same time Mac WILL be able to learn things - Cam will run many plays that Mac would also run, and Mac can look at the film and see how the other team defended it or what kind of tricky coverages they used, etc. Obviously they'd play a lot less close to the LOS if Mac was in though, so it's not perfect - but it's definitely not of zero value.
Amazing. Literally every other TV sports broadcaster, when told that they will have a radio simulcast, switches over to a semi-radio style.
Zolak has gone from an asset to a liablity in just a couple of years.
"See how Cam panics when the primary is covered, how he reverts to scramble mode immediately, takes a 1 yard loss, flashes the Superman pose, then dances back to the huddle........ Don't do that."
"Instead, work your progressions"

Yeah, I was wondering about that, given the number of punt returns Taylor got yesterday. Would an all pro punt returner and reasonable #5 WR have trade value?
That is the choice though isn’t it? Cam will be Cam, and fail to execute on crucial passing downs. It will cost us some games. Some fans will boo. Sooner or later he is replaced. I don’t think it will be a long leash.
