not sure if someone posted already, but man is McDermott annoyed about this loss and people thinking it was because of BB's coaching lol

This was one of his post-game quotes;

"Let's not give more credit than we need to give credit to Bill Belichick in this one," McDermott said after the loss. "Whether it's Bill or anybody else -- they beat us, right? You sit here and you tell me when we start with an average starting field position at the 40-yard line and he starts at the 23-yard line -- and I'm rounding up in both cases -- and we were 1 for 4 in the red zone, and they were 0 for 1 in the red zone? You give me that ahead of time then I like my chances. I like my chances. So, with all due respect, it's not a Bill Belichick-type thing. It's what are you doing with the opportunities you got? What are you doing with the opportunities you got? We turned the ball over at the plus 30-something yard line. It's sloppy football. It's sloppy football. So, I'm very comfortable in that situation."

There's been a lot of stuff about Bill not trusting Mac in the wind and his arm strength and everything, but one thing Mac emphasized in his time at the podium was that the coaches made a point about not turning the ball over. With the wind blowing the ball wide this way and that (as we saw with Allen's throws), I think Bill just didn't want to take any chances that the ball got turned over. Harry's muffed punt and the Bills' fumble were such big swings in the game that I think any additional turnover could have changed the game immensely and Bill didn't want to risk that when it was obviously going to be a low-scoring game.

Some thoughts (didn't read the entire thread so sorry if I am redundant)

• McDermott blew it. He should have taken the wind in the fourth quarter rather than the ball to start the second half. Sure, conventional wisdom is to get the ball first in the second half and it gives you one more possession than the other team. But he knew that odds were the Pats were not going to score a lot of points whether they had an extra possession or not and having the wind at his back in a tight game in the final minutes of the fourth quarter might give him an advantage.

I always thought the result of the coin toss win was take the ball or defer. Deferring the ball gives you the option of what side of the field you prefer on the opening kickoff. Never knew it could be used again in the second half?

I want to know why Harry was out there returning punts and kicks in the first place. Isn't that Gunner's job? Harry's good at one thing and one thing only and that's blocking. There's no reason for him to be out there as a kick or punt returner.

Nice foresight going for two at the start. Gave Bill's fewer options at the end.

That 2 point conversion changed the complexion of the game. Bills were going to be chasing that point all night long. Surprised they didn't try to match it on their score.

He wasn't instrumental. There's a concept called value over replacement player. I'm not seeing that a TE3 or TE2 or minimum salary fullback couldn't do the same thing. It's like giving overly enthusiastic praise for a mentally challenged student.

I think we underestimate the value of blocking. If not for Harry's blocking Harris might not have gone the full distance. What about the game against Cleveland.

You can argue you can get a blocker or tackle for it but what about the possibility of jet sweep or contested catch with Harry.

I think the sum of parts in Patriots team is immense. Individually they do not stack well, but the synergy it generates for the entire team is unbelievable. The ability of agholor to stretch the field opens lanes for Meyers and Bourne , Harry blocking improves run game, bolden blocking protects mac and allows him to have better time to complete passes, Jakob generating immense lanes , gunner creating favorable field position, slater pinning opponent receivers . These are selfless players.

These might not be highlight plays but in grand scheme of things, winning these smaller battles or 1 on 1s helps us to win .

I still hope Harry as well as Jonnu can have their amendola moments in post season.

if you win the toss, you the the choice of taking the ball or defending - or choosing what endzone to defend... if the winning team makes the choice on keeping/deferring, the team that loses the toss gets the option of what endzone to defend...

Huge tactical error on the part of the Bills... they should have chosen what endzone to defend, so they would have the wind in the 4th q

They changed the rules a few years back that if you defer, you have the option to either decide if you take the ball or not or which end zone you will defend in the second half. So if you defer, you can end up choosing which end zone to defend in both halves.

As someone who played guard and nose/MLB at 5'10", it really is about pad level and physics most of the time.
