The New England Patriots offense entered Week Seven of the 2021 NFL season, under close scrutiny. From conservative play-calling to inconsistent execution, fans and media alike began to wonder whether this iteration of the Patriots were capable of putting points on the board.

On Sunday, they put those questions to rest. Quarterback Mac Jones completed 24 of 36 passes, compiling 307 yards with two touchdowns. Running backs Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor would contribute two touchdown runs, each as the Pats pummeled the New York Jets 54-13 at Gillette Stadium in Week Seven.

Patriots rookie running back Rhamondre Stevenson found himself among the inactives 90 minutes prior to kickoff after finding the end zone last Sunday. The No. 120 overall pick out of Oklahoma had not been listed on the injury report.

That surprise left the backfield depth chart with starter Damien Harris, veteran Brandon Bolden and a recent scratch in J.J. Taylor. And with room to run.

Over the course of this 2021 NFL season, we’ve impatiently waited for a game like this one by the Patriots. We’ve waited for the Patriots to not play down to their competition as they did in Houston. Or commit a game-changing error as they did against Miami. Or lose in the fourth quarter as they did against Tampa Bay, or in overtime as they did against Dallas.

We’ve waited for a game without turnovers, penalties, poor pass protection. It took a home game in Week 7 against the New York Jets as the Patriots put it all together on Sunday in a dominating 54-13 victory.

Rookie quarterback Mac Jones had the best game of his NFL career, completing 24-of-36 passes for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Bolden had a career game, leading the Patriots with six receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. Damien Harris (106 yards, two touchdowns) rushed past the century mark for the second-straight week.

This was the highest-scoring Patriots game since 2013 when they had 55 points against Pittsburgh. Their 551 total yards are the most since 2017 when they had 555 against New Orleans.

The Jets committed a defensive holding penalty on the first play of the game. On their third drive, kicker Matt Ammendola missed a 48-yard field goal at 1:53 of the first quarter. That would have given New York its first points in the first quarter this season. On the next series, on third down, a Jets encroachment penalty gave the Pats a first down, leading to a field goal. On fourth-and-1 from the 28-yard line, Jets running back Ty Johnson was stuffed. On the next Patriots drive, the Jets were flagged for defensive pass interference — on a third-down incomplete pass — to put the Pats at the 1-yard line. That led to a Hunter Henry touchdown pass play.

The Jets allowed more points to the Pats in the first half than any team has in an entire game this season. The Patriots didn’t punt until late in the third quarter. Brian Hoyer was in the game. The Pats had 11 different players catch passes on Sunday. The Jets lost the turnover battle, 3-0.

The Patriots spent all week feeling bothered by last week's loss to the Cowboys. A visit from the New York Jets was just what they needed.

The Patriots scored on all five of their first-half drives -- four for touchdowns -- en route to a 54-13 victory over the Jets.

With the win, the Patriots improve to 3-4 on the season, while the Jets drop to 1-5. After losing their first four home games of the season, the Patriots finally earned their first win in Foxboro.

Patriots improve to 5-1, Chargers drop to 2-5

Pre-Game Outlook:
The Chargers are ranked first in the NFL in offense averaging 433 yards per game, and first in defense, giving up just 255 yards per game. Here’s the caveat: The Bolts have been putting up the solid numbers against the likes of the Chiefs, Jaguars, Seahawks, Cardinals, Raiders, and Rams. Not exactly the iron of the NFL. The Patriots are also putting up some big numbers on offense, against some much stronger defenses, averaging 30.8 points per game to lead the league.

The San Diego Chargers blundered right down to the bitter end against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Kris Brown's 50-yard field goal attempt smacked off the right upright with 23 seconds left, allowing the Patriots to escape with a 23-20 win over the mistake-prone Chargers yesterday.

The Chargers, who trailed 20-3 heading into the fourth quarter, were in position to at least send it into overtime. They held New England to just 179 yards of offense.

Leading by 3 with two minutes left, New England gambled on fourth-and-1 from its 49, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis was stuffed for a 1-yard loss by Antwan Applewhite. Coach Bill Belichick had challenged the spot of the previous play and lost, costing him his final timeout. San Diego then moved to the 27.

Brown lined up to try a 45-yarder, but guard Louis Vasquez was whistled for a false start. Moved back 5 yards, Brown's attempt was long enough but hit the right upright. Brown was signed last week because Nate Kaeding has an injured groin.[/indent=3]

Live Game Blog:
Patriots coach Bill Belichick dodged a week’s worth of scrutiny when Chargers kicker Kris Brown’s attempt at a game-tying field goal hit the upright with 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter, and the Patriots held on for a 23-20 victory today at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Belichick decided to have the Patriots go for a first down on fourth-and-1 from the Patriots’ 49 with two minutes left in the game, a situation strikingly similar to last season’s game against the Colts when Belichick went for it on fourth-and-2 rather than punt and let his defense try to hold the Colts.

Patriots improve to 6-0, Jets drop to 5-1

The New England Patriots historic winning streak officially became official following Sunday's 13-7 win over the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots set the NFL's all-time regular-season record with 18 consecutive wins, the longest regular-season wining streak in the 85-year history of the league.
The Patriots have won the last 21 times they have taken the field - the all-time pro football record for consecutive total victories - but they are only now atop the list because the NFL's record books recognize only regular season contests. They eclipsed the mark of 17 straight regular-season wins Sunday set by the 1933-34 Chicago Bears.

The New England Patriots survived a stern test from the previously unbeaten New York Jets to set an NFL record with their 18th consecutive regular-season win.
Corey Dillon ran for 115 yards to help the Patriots win 13-7 and break the record set by the Chicago Bears 70 years ago. Tom Brady survived three sacks to throw for 230 yards, the rarely used receiver David Givens caught five passes for 107 yards and the defence held the formidable Jets in check.
The Patriots won, as usual, by making two huge plays - both by veteran defenders - when the game and the streak were on the line.
Trailing 13-7, the Jets had driven 64 yards from their own nine-yard line when Willie McGinest sprang out of the backfield to dump Curtis Martin, the league's leading rusher, for a three-yard loss.
"The draw is one of their favourite plays, always, and you have to account for [Martin]," McGinest said. "He's gashed us before with it. He just happened to run in my gap."
The next play - fourth down and eight yards to go - also proved too familiar to the Patriots. When Chad Pennington threw to Wayne Chrebet, there were two defenders on the wide receiver and the pass was swatted away.
"For once," said the New England coach Bill Belichick, "we had him covered."

With a little over two minutes to play and the Jets driving for a go-ahead score, the Patriots defense huddled on the sideline.
It was fourth-and-8 from the New England 30, and the Patriots clung to a six-point lead. They stayed calm, drawing on their varied experiences in close games, and knew they had to get after Chad Pennington to have any chance at saving the game.
When the ball was finally snapped, Pennington hurried his throw to Wayne Chrebet, and Rodney Harrison broke up the pass with 2:14 remaining. The Patriots had come through as they always did, and extended their NFL victory streak to 21 games in a 13-7 win over the Jets yesterday.

The defending champs shut down Curtis Martin and held off a late rally in the closing minutes with a key fourth-down stop Sunday in a grueling 13-7 win over the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium.
Martin -- the AFC's leading rusher entering the game -- finished with a season-low 70 yards on 20 carries. The Jets had a chance to steal the game in the fourth quarter until safety Rodney Harrison deflected Chad Pennington's pass attempt to Wayne Chrebet on fourth-and-8 from the Patriots 30 with 2:19 to go.

Rodney Harrison, Ted Johnson and Tedy Bruschi had monster games on defense with 10 tackles each. Johnson also threw in a forced fumble.
The Jets defense looked solid against the Patriots run during the first series of the game, stopping Dillon for losses of 2 yards twice and another time for no gain. Passing was a different matter as Brady found Givens for gains of 18 and 15. But faced with a third and 10 from the Jets 28, all Brady could do was dump down to Faulk for 5 yards and Vinatieri came on for a 41-yard field goal that was good.
New York threatened on its first drive, patiently moving the ball downfield with short passing and the running of Martin. On third and one from the New England 19, Pennington rolled to his right and connected with Sowell in the flat. Ted Johnson laid a hit on him and the ball squirted out. Randall Gay, who started in place of Eugene Wilson, recovered on the 7-yard line.
"That was big," Ty Law said. "It stopped their momentum.

A second mistake for the Jets came on the Patriots subsequent possession when New England was lined up to punt on fourth and one. New York was flagged for 12 men on the field and New England had a first down and new life.
Two plays later, Givens made a beautiful leaping grap 42 yards downfield and the Patriots were first and 10 on the Jets 10. That was the extent ot the drive as the quick Jets defense swarmed the red zone and Vinatieri and a 27-yard field goal was all the Patriots could manage.

The Patriots defeated Denver for the first time since 1980, after going 0–11 lifetime against John Elway. Terry Allen earned a game ball with 106 yards rushing on 17 carries, with two touchdowns.

Both teams rushed for 133 yards, while Brian Griese threw for 309 yards - compared to 192 yards for Drew Bledsoe. Kevin Faulk scored on a 15-yard first quarter rushing touchdown, and the Patriots lead 24–13 after three quarters. The Patriots survived a late Broncos rally to win, when Jason Elam missed a 59-yard field goal with 1:45 left to play.

One interesting aspect of this game was that neither team had a turnover.

The Broncos scored in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and trailed New England 24-19. Mike Shanahan, a.k.a. the Mastermind, took the automatic extra point, rather than trying the two-point play to bring Denver within a field goal of the Patriots. A short time later the Broncos got that field goal - but lost, 24-23.

A cold rainy day lead to ten fumbles and nine turnovers. Sam Cunningham rushed for 118 yards (5.4 ypc) and a TD, and also had 43 yards receiving on three catches.

The Patriots led 26-9 after a Steve Grogan bootleg three plays into the fourth quarter. Buffalo responded with an 11-play scoring drive to make it a ten-point game with 8:51 to play. However, Jess Phillips fumbled two plays later, leading to a Bills field goal with 4:49 remaining. The Patriots wound the clock down on the next possession, but after a five-yard sack, Steve Grogan threw an interception that Buffalo returned 44 yards down to the Pats 19.

Mike Haynes appeared to pick off a pass to clinch the victory, but a flag was thrown and the play was nullified. After three incomplete passes, OJ Simpson scored on fourth down. Problem for Buffalo was that at this point there were only 49 seconds remaining.

Then the extra point was no good - making it a 4-point game rather than three. It was a moot point because the Patriots recovered the onside kick, and survived to win by the odd score of 26-22 - thanks to two missed PAT and a failed two-point try.

Despite the Buffalo-centric description below, this short video has a good clip
of a Grogan-to-Francis TD, and a Grogan keeper for the winning touchdown.

Justin Fields threw for 179 yards and a touchdown and ran for 82 yards and another score, and the Bears defense forced returning Patriots starter Mac Jones back to the bench on Monday night to give Chicago a 33-14 victory over New England.
In a matchup of quarterbacks from the 2020 College Football Playoff National Championship game, Fields outperformed Jones, who led Alabama to victory over Fields’ Ohio State. And Fields also outplayed Patriots rookie Bailey Zappe, who came on after Jones was managed just two three-and-outs and an interception in his return after missing three games with a high ankle sprain.
With the damp Gillette Stadium crowd chanting “Zappe! Zappe!” the fourth-round draft pick from Western Kentucky led the Patriots to back-to-back touchdowns and a 14-10 lead. But Fields answered with a 25-yard pass to Khalil Herbert and then, after Zappe fumbled in the last two minutes of the first-half, the Bears (3-4) added a field goal to make it 20-14.
In the second-half it was all Chicago, as they ran off 23 unanswered points.
Zappe was 5 of 6 for 109 yards and a touchdown in the first-half. But in the second, he was 9 of 16 for 76 yards and two interceptions. Jones completed 3 of 6 passes for 13 yards, with one interception. Rhamondre Stevenson caught eight passes for 59 yards and ran 11 times for 39 for the Patriots (3-4).
