Watching a Master at work is very instructive. Just like the annual Drafts where everyone immesdiately criticizes what the Master does, only to see after a little perspective that it was a wise, well thought out plan.

BB had a policy of stretching to patch the Super bowl club for another run in 2006 and 2007 and even going into 2008. He used draft picks in trades to get patching materials,so the Drafts were not too productive, otherwise. He traded draft picks for Moss, Welker, that worked spectacularly, and the WR and DE from the Raiders that didn’t work out too well.

But when Brady went down in 2008, BB recognized that the end had come. Patching wouldn’t work anymore. The Team had gotten too old and slow, not producing enough INTs, fumbles and other "Big plays".

He decided that rebuilding was necessary. So he created a plan, and without sharing it with us, and began. Some players were sent into retirement, like Rodney, Junior etc. Others were traded for Draft picks, like Richard Seymour, Matt Cassel, Mike Vrabel, and a starting CB/KR and others.

Then the Master went to work. He recognized that youth and speed is needed in some positions more than others. So he invested repetitively on Defense and specifically in the Secondary and to a degree in the Line backing. He added a few late picks to the Defensive line but no big picks. Still he found future reserves and in Pryor, Deaderick, Brace, Richard, Love etc. But think of all the picks invested in youth and speed in the secondary and line backing. McCourty, Meriwether, Butler, Wheatley, Chung, and Mayo, Spikes, Crabel and Cunningham, while also looking and finding talent in UDFAs Arrington, Fletcher, and Guyton.

He did little with the younger Offense, mostly adding patches, and drafting youth and speed in WRs which take a few seasons to mature, like Tate, Price. He added TEs, like Gronk and Hernandez. While finding some UDFAs to contribute, like BJGE and Woodhead.

We can see he continued to do so, until the Team led the league in INTs; he then knew he was ready to do other things. This past Draft, he showed this when he turned his attention to the Offense, drafting a future All Pro at LOT, to go with a young Probowl RT. He also added some young RBs.

Only this offseason was he prepared to employ experienced vets where youth and speed gives way to sage experience. He knew that he needed lots of depth to make it work, so the vets could pace themselves. He did so. Look at all the defnsive linemen candidates onthe roster.

Suddenly, he has a full fledged Super bowl Favorite, with no weaknesses anywhere, and deep depth everywhere, not just a Team that is a possible contender. Yet in the meanwhile, he kept it competitive during the past two seasons while Work was in Progress. Astounding, winning while rebuilding.

Now that the Master Builder is about finished with his rebuilding, we can see it, the architect’s full plans; and what you should do first, second, and last. Like considering one of his Drafts after he startled you, it is simply Awesome, just awesome. He executed a Five Year rebuilding Plan in three years with Double Drafts.

Yes and no - he's "built" while remaining very very capable of winning it all.

Truth is, building is a big part of it, but in the end one bad game ruins it all. Skill, effort, luck. Takes all three. Unfortunately, we've seen it.

Building is necessary, of course, but I think most of us will reserve judgement until we see a real playoff run. "One and done" is not going to suffice this year.

Everyone wants to win the Super Bowl. Realistically, however, I doubt most fans would be satisfied with anything less than an AFCCG berth for this year's squad.

I agree with this - but speaking for myself - I won't be totally satisfied with anything less than the SB. Championship game ? Not much better than losing right away... Losing is losing. Winning is everything. This is not an expansion team glad to make the playoffs...

Actually winning this SB would be even better, than just getting there.

Brady needs two more for his fist full of rings.

Then all the Montana worship can stop.

My POV is that after the CB debacles of days gone past, BB knew he had to rebuild his D backfield and LB corp.. and he began, having put that in place. The second step was to be able to then put in place a different D line, no Ty Warren and moving away from the 3-4.

But still believe that this d will defy definition, and what we will see a lot of are variations of various sub packages.. last year we had Arrington as a hand in the dirt D lineman occasionally. Now he has more moving parts and can even confuse the Offensive Opposition even more.

BB was the guy who figured out how to use LT, and he will revolutionize how defenses are played.. next year there will be a rush to pick up our cast offs and other NFL look alikes, and this will be done with mixed results. OTOH all of this is premature as we have only played two preseason games..

This team is rebuilding on the fly in front or out eyes, and the D and O will be sustainable for the next 7-8 years at least. The product will be a very consistent team.

While producing winning records the past two seasons, those teams had obvious weaknesses, to go along with their strengths.

I judge that this Team has a lot fewer weaknesses, and is much more complete. Thus it can win games in the Playoffs.

Last year we saw the master builder having torn down the prior aged defensive edifice construct a new D with young talent. Not so good at first, the D improved thru December when alas injuries in the D line left them too depleted to be a strong playoff winner.

This year the youngsters are more seasoned and he's been perspicatious and fortunate to find FAs who seemingly fit the new roles. I see this year's flexible front and assignment D as having evolved from the 7 man walk around first used against Drew in Buffalo years ago, but a work in progress, in pre-season beta test so to speak. So we might more accurately describe Belichick as a Master Beta.

Somehow the way you shoe-horned the word beta into the penultimate sentence (to set up the punchline) was probably the funniest bit

Ah, a rare person correctly using penultimate!
