Smith adjusting to his secondary career

The question to Bill Belichick was simple: If there is any room for an extra staff member as part of the NFL's minority coaching program, could Smith be a part of it with the Patriots?

The answer was yes, although the way the situation unfolded was a bit unexpected. The 40-year-old Smith was scheduled to coach only through training camp, then return to Maryland to continue a career in real estate.

But Smith always had a knack for sticking around, didn't he?

By the time training camp ended, he had a permanent job. Smith is now a full-fledged member of Belichick's staff, working with the defensive backs alongside Joel Collier.

I was going to post this too. If it all works out I think Pepper and Otis will be looked on one day in the future as part of the BB coaching tree that spread around the league.

That is good news, because Joel Collier is completely overmatched and underqualified as a DBs coach.

However, Otis has never coached before, so it will take him some time (i.e., maybe >1 season) for him to learn how to effectively teach proper tackling and turnover technique.

Posting articles like this just creates confusion. How are we supposed to believe that Bill Belichick is a cold fish if we keep seeing stories like this where he clearly believes in giving hard working smart people an opportunity? Otis better hope he never takes a head coaching job, he won't even get a handshake.

I've been toying with a sideways look at "the handshake" business - which would make Manigini's job easier with the New York media and J-E-T-S fanbase: (A) a friendly relationship with his old mentor running the rival club, or (B) an apparently angry and vindictive Bill Belichick giving Mangini a cold shoulder? Call me twisted, but I just can't shake the thought that BB is self sacrificing and cunning enough to take some of the scrutiny off how Mangini and his new staff does their job and redirect the day time crowd to a ready made soap opera. :violent:
