Might be tough for them being so upset sitting at home, they'd probably be better off just going to school to take their minds off the loss.
Oh really? I'm at the base in Bangor Maine and I've heard stories about Loring. Know some people that used to be stationed up there. I can only imagine going active duty and end up in friggin northern Maine lol...
It was actually a pretty good station for us. Tons of kids. Decent housing. All types of fields to play football, baseball etc.. during the summer and they had a nearby youth center, ski slopes and gymnasium for the winter. My father's family was down in NH so good to get a visit now and then.
Schools closed in October for potato picking season. So every year I would go out and pick potatoes twelve hours a day for fifty cents a barrel. Used to bring home about fifteen bucks a day.
Funny story. My father was nearing retirement and requested to go back to Loring so that he could retire close to home. He ended up as a first shirt for the TDY airmen that came to Loring for temporary duty. One winter day the temps were well below freezing and one of his TDY guys called him and asked for a ride to work. Apparently the airman had decided to bypass the defrost option in his car by dumping a bucket of hot water on his windshield and it shattered. hahahaha
But yeah the winters could get brutal at times. Good times though.
