Nick Caserio on why the Pats drafted Edelbinky

I think Julian is going to be great, especially since he is just a rookie(and is already doing well). The thing that the patriots really need for him is to develop that "I can get open in small spaces" skill that welker has.

He's also taller & bigger than Welker. This kid is going to turn into quite a weapon. The unfortunate injury to Welker will only push that forward as he gains experience in the playoffs.

Plus he makes a good emergency 3rd QB.

Helluva nice draft pick.

He not only works hard for the extra yards, but he protects the ball well too.

He's a SMART player who understands his role and works to get the best result for each play. He seems to have an intuitive understanding of where the sticks are, and what the best result for each play should be.
.

I posted after the first pre-season game how Edelman was showing Galloway where to line up on certain plays when Edelman was split wide and Galloway was the inside receiver (so it wasn't inability to hear the QB) and it was obvious he knew the playbook. After returned the punt for a TD and I told them i thought it was the first time he'd ever returned a punt in college or the pros, I had Philly fans asking me who was this guy and when told, their response was essentially.." you guys ( Patriots) always seem to find gems at the bottom of the draft like Brady and this guy"

I have zero concern - ZERO - about a dropoff from Welker to Edelman once the ball is in Edelman's hands. Getting the ball in Edelman's hands on the critical 3rd & 5, that's where the difference will show up although that's meant as praise to Welker, not a negative to Edelman who's only a rookie.

Which is precisely where Moss, Watson, and Faulk will have to step up. Edelman is taking Welker's spot, but it takes a little bit from everyone to replace him.
