NFL Playoff Picture, Week 13: Panthers Clinch, Patriots Drop To #3 Seed

John Morgan

Prior to their come from behind victory over New Orleans, Carolina became the first team to clinch a playoff spot when Tampa Bay defeated Atlanta 23-19. The Panthers have won their third straight NFC South title and are a virtual lock for a first round bye. Meanwhile New England’s upset loss to Philadelphia dropped the Patriots to the number three seed in the AFC – though what many are overlooking is that the Pats still control their own destiny for a first round bye since Denver and Cincinnati play each other in Week 16.

The Bengals have the AFC tiebreaker (8-1 vs 7-1) over the Patriots only because they've played one more AFC game than the Pats have.

The Patriots current seeding at #3 is completely meaningless for that reason.

Also, Cincinnati still has to play Denver, so one of them will have three losses. A tie would be delicious

Yesterday the Pats could have won the division. In year's past things always seemed to fall the Pats' way when these scenarios presented themselves. This year - not so much. Two weeks in a row the Pats could've won the division with losses by division teams coupled with a win and two weeks in a row the Pats didn't hold up their end of the bargain and the NYJ and/or Buffalo didn't cooperate. I just have a feeling this year's very different and that final game at Miami is going to be for a bye or maybe even the division....

Panthers could go undefeated. Their last four games are:

vs Falcons
@ Giants
@ Falcons
vs Bucs

Panthers going 16-0. Get used to it

Reading this burns me up ! Two weeks ago we were almost certainly winning the division and very close to a bye . How things can change in such a short span. Denver won aided by some very questionable calls, but yesterday's loss was solely on the Patriots . This loss better wake the team up, they were probably getting a little too ****y , hopefully they are humbled now and get down to serious business !!

Yeah.... They won almost all the games i thought they would drop already. Still eyeing those two back to back road games as the final hope of killing their undefeated dreams.
