Thought on which games might be "flexed"in 2013.

Since it's bye time and I am bored.

Anyone Know if the NFL still allows CBS & Fox to protect a game each week ?

Obviously NBC is wishing they could start with week 10.
What a dud.

Weeks 11 & 12 are Broncos so no flexing there.

Week 13 is a dud, but major markets are involved and I see no other game
they could do.

Week 14 I think Seahawks vs 49ers might be a better game.
Panther vs Saints might be good.

Week 15 kind of a dud. Jets vs Panthers maybe.

Then The week. Week 16, Pats vs Ravens seems lame, but maybe the Ravens can turn things around and still be in the hunt.
Saints vs Panthers maybe.
Colts vs Chiefs.
If they are both still in it Browns vs Jets.

Week 17 the whole schedule looks less than a thrill at this point.

Thoughts ?

Why is Cowboys-Saints a dud? They wouldn't have flexed this game out. Should be a good one.

Dallas @ New Orleans?

I don't know if I would call that a dud. The Monday game, now that's a dud. A dud that I hope TB wins.

I don't know. I think if NBC could flex right now they would think long about either Philly @ GB* and Detroit @ Chicago**.

*Two of the biggest stories in the NFL right now. GB without Rodgers and Foles just throwing for 7 TD.

**If GB were to lose to Philly then Detroit/Chicago would be for first place in the "Black and Blue" division.

Yeah, that's a head-scratcher. Two teams with high national profiles, both leading their divisions. What's not to like for a tv programmer?

Dolphins-Buccaneers on Monday is an absolute nightmare, though. Non-contender no-name teams drowning in off-field messes, with a geographic interest range that extends all the way up to greater Daytona Beach.

Yes my mistake on week 10.

Re: Thought on which games might be "flexed"in 2013.

People saying the Cowboys/Saints game will be good: really? The Cowboys are 5-4, having beaten every bad team they've faced and lost to every good team. They almost lost to the Vikings at home. The Saints are one of the best in the league despite that loss to the Jets and Brees is pretty much unstoppable at home. The Cowboys are going to get absolutely demolished.

Oops...first read it as "fixed".

Good in a ratings sense, IMO. Flexed games are often ones with bad teams that won't pull in the ratings or a combination of a better game being available that will.

Say what you will about the Cowboys, but one thing they do is pull in the numbers. A lot of their games are interesting because of the hype surrounding them (and watching Romo choke at the end of them is always a good laugh). That Cowboys v. Saints game certainly fits the bill for that.

Two division leaders this late in the season is an easy sell. We'll see if the game matches up to the hype.

Can't speak for the others, but I was thinking "good for ratings" rather than "good, competitive football." I'm pretty sure that the decision will be made based on the former, not the latter.

Miami-Tampa Bay, meanwhile, should be categorized as "good for nothing."

The networks don't especially care whether the game will be good or not. They care about how many people will watch it. Unless they're Jaguars-level bad, a ton of people will always watch the Cowboys.

Especially with Dallas, cowboys are always must watch tv. They can beat anyone and they can lose to anyone.

Cowboys always win one game a season they really shouldn't that gets hopes up. Wouldn't be shocked if they win this game.

True, but I believe that when it comes to flex scheduling and the Sunday night games there is also more of an emphasis of what is (and is not) a compelling matchup. So a game that Fox might like (such as the Giants-Redskins) because it will do well in the ratings regardless of the records of the two teams, the NFL does not want on Sunday night on NBC; they want to reserve that SNF time slot as a showcase for the best football games available.

Re: Thought on which games might be "flexed"in 2013.

I just hope that no Pats games are flexed. They should be set with Panthers, Broncos and Ravens already slated for prime time. In fact, that Ravens game might be flexed OUT of the night slot depending on how the races shape up by then.

Re: Thought on which games might be "flexed"in 2013.

Anyone Know if the NFL still allows CBS & Fox to protect a game each week ?

These were the games originally protected by CBS and FOX

Week 11
CBS: Kansas City-Denver
FOX: San Francisco-New Orleans

Week 12
CBS: None
FOX: None

Week 13
CBS: Denver-Kansas City
FOX: Chicago-Minnesota

Week 14
CBS: Indinapolis-Cincinnati
FOX: Seattle-San Francisco

Week 15
CBS: New England-Miami
FOX: Green Bay-Dallas

Week 16
CBS: Denver-Houston
FOX: Dallas-Washington

The NFL made an exception to their rule regarding the protecting of games, and flexed KC-Denver for week 11 anyways. CBS surely got some type of concession in return (perhaps something to do with next year's schedule).

Nobody bothered protecting any games in week 12 because it was obvious the Pats-Broncos game was not going to get bumped out of the Sunday night time slot.

I am hoping it does get moved to 1PM or 4 PM.
