I think this is probably the best news from the NFL we've had the entire off season...so far.
First of all, I hate that fans demand ABSOLUTE perfection from the refs. We demand it from no one else. Players commit multiple errors EVERY game. Coaches all make errors multiple times throughout game on the hundreds of calls they make and we understand and accept that reality. Yet the refs come under some otherworldly criteria where THEY have to be perfect.
For decades the league suffered through referee mistakes or judgements because it was understood that football was a human game played by humans and reffed by humans and with human come mistakes and we lived with them as long as we believed they were honestly made. Players and coaches could deal with it because they understood that over time, they benefitted from as many missed calls as they were harmed. But at some point, we've become increasingly more intolerant of the concept of refs making mistakes.
Quite frankly, I often am surprised just how often they turn out to be right. How often they get it right on 2 feet inbounds, and on toe taps etc. I am consistently wrongs so often based on what I initially see. Now I get pissed at them for making calls on ticky tack plays, or calling a PI when the ball was clearly uncatchable too, but that is part of the game. I think BB had the best and simplest solution. The HC gets 3 challenges a game and he can challenge ANYTHING. A hold not called, a man off the LOS, an official's judgement. Anything he wants. He gets those 3 shots but has to shut the **** up about everything else and the officials do their part of the game.
Just sayin'
