The league has become a pass first ,run support second league. I think BB will use his new strengths as follows:Go to a modified big dime defence.3 idl 2 pass rush olb cb Gilmore on primary rec (Watkins ) Jones on fastest wr (Hill) Jackson on slot rec (Hammond )also 3 safeties Phillips te(Kelce)Duggar SS (cover in box and spy QB) and FS D Mac help on deep throws. We would hopefully get pass rush from IDL and De/Olb Winkovich and Uche.Coverage would start (man to man )and then switch to zone defence.

You still need to stop the run. Teams won’t have to pass if they can just simply hand the ball off. Their D line looks weaker than last year.

Pats aren’t very good against the RPO.

They can put out their "new pats defence" all they want. Teams will just hand the ball off and force the Pats to get out of that "defence".

I must have missed something. IMO, of all the aspects of the 2019 patriots that needs improvement, it is the pass defense that needs the least improvement.

It seems that every year, we add the normal number of new players on defense. And every year, several posters want to change our defense because the league has changed. More than anything else in his coaching and GM duties, it is here that I trust Belichick the most. He may the very best (or close) in the league at developing and adapting defenses. Of course, it is frustrating to see the early games, since part of the Defense According To Belichick is for the defense to develop as the season goes on with the idea the the defense doesn't really gel until mid-season.

Yes, we do need to adapt to the losses of KVN and Collins. Winovich will pick up some of the slack, as will our rookies Uche and Jennings.
    =======
I look to new schemes that will help in our RUN defense. At times, it seemed to be weak, especially against option and running quarterbacks, a problem for many years.
Perhaps, Bentley and Cowart will step up. Maybe we'll play Onwenu at NT. Perhaps Allen will be better than we think.

IMO, the current defense would be helped most by the addition of a DT. But then, I said that before last season, and Belichick disagreed.

Our run defense will be paramount next season, because our secondary is one of the best in football.

Most 3-4 defenses have a monster on the nose that commands a double team. We do not currently have that. Should be interesting to see how bb schemes this.

Agree completely here. I was sure we'd grab a big fatty for the middle at some point in the draft. The interior of the DL is the weakness of this defense and what coach does to mitigate this weakness over the next three months will be fascinating viewing.

I think the defense being assembled right now is a direct response to our inability to effectively defend the RPO. With Philips, Uche and Dugger you have 3 very high end athletes who can cover alot of ground.

This actually brings us to the Pats biggest problem. We actually don’t have a good passing offense so teams can run on us and expect to be in the game. Teams can’t run on the Chiefs because Mahomes and that offense will make it unfeasible

Best way to stay in the game against the chiefs is to run the ball and kill clock. now if the chiefs successfully defend against the run, there is no chance to stay in the game.

Agree about Pats interior line defense. Losing Danny Shelton and Malcolm Brown over the past 2 years and substituting Beau Allen does not seem like a good way to improve the run defense.

Tennessee ran all over the Pats and still only scored 14 points until the pick 6 that was irrelevant. The Pats were in position to win the game and offense couldn't do it. So letting them run the ball may not be the worst strategy if it keeps the score in range. No one play is responsible for losing a game but sometimes its the nail in the coffin. The Edelman drop was the nail. I really thought we were going to score. Last year's team just didn't have the heart of previous teams. Too much selfishness, people playing for free agency and of course, injuries.

It will be fun to watch if they actually do flip him over to the DLine. I love the idea but don't see it happening.

I expect teams to try and push this D line around. I hope chase is working to get stronger. He got pushed around last season.

Nfl strength and conditioning programs are the best and will make players stronger. No college programs, except maybe Georgia, Iowa and Wisconsin, have anything remotely close.

Unfortunately, the virus has made this offseason uniquely different. Should be interesting to see what happens with the strength and conditioning development of the second year players.
