MORSE: Draft Analysis and Thoughts on Patriots Rookie Mini Camp
Mark Morse
The draft is over and it’s time to analyze what Eliot Wolf did in his 1st Draft. You really need three years to give an accurate grade on the draft. Right now, it’s just speculation and opinion on how they did.

"I would have rather of seen a trade-down..."
"Eliot Wolf failed...."
"Sounds like we got rid of DaVante Parker only to draft another Parker!"
"Eliot Wolf was not prepared..."

All this and yet you say you're taking a wait and see approach and you give them a B. Doesn't sound like you want to give them a B at all.

Parker is listed at 6'3 and plays like 3'6 I might climax when I see a Patriots WR win a jump ball.

I have to agree with Mark on this point.
Hopefully time will prove me wrong.

Round 3 #68 Caedan Wallace OT Penn State – Eliot Wolf was not prepared for the run of Left Tackles at the end of the 2nd round. Further, his trade of pick #34 didn’t get him any more assets he could trade to get back up into the middle of that run. Patrick Paul LT Houston went #55, Blake Fisher (started at LT as a true freshman at Notre Dame) #59, Roger Rosengarten Washington #62 and Kingsley Suamataia BYU #63.
The Patriots drafted a player they really liked, but because of the early run of OTs, they had to take him a round or two earlier than they had planned.

It will be interesting to compare and contrast the progress of the wide receivers of the 2024 NFL draft over the next few seasons.

First, the big three: Harrison vs Nabers vs Odunze.
Then the comparisons of Thomas, Worthy, Pearsall, Coleman, Legette, Coleman, Polk, Mitchell and Corley.

Of more specific interest to us will be Legette vs Coleman vs McConkey vs Polk, as well as Baker vs Devontez Walker.

Round 2 #34 TRADE This was their most tradeable asset to gain additional draft capital. The Patriots tried to trade back into the 1st Round and thought they had a potential trade with the Bills. Unconfirmed rumor has it the Bills, not wanting to help their division rival, took the Patriots offer and passed it along to Carolina. Buffalo received a better offer from Carolina and the Panthers took the player the Patriots wanted, WR Xavier Legette. Buffalo took Keon Coleman ahead of the Patriots.
In my opinion the Patriots should have sat in this position and taken WR Ladd McConkey from Georgia. McConkey was uncoverable in the Senior Bowl practices and all season long for Georgia. He is not a true #1, X Wide Receiver. However, he is as close to that as anyone in the draft. McConkey is 6’, 186 lbs., and runs a 4.39 40-yard dash. No CB in press man coverage could stop him from beating them off the line.
Instead, the Patriots made a trade with the LA Chargers by swapping picks #34 and #137 for #37 and #110 and they take McConkey.

Perhaps the title of "General Manager of the New England Patriots" is cursed, and should never be used again.

Patriots GM Search
Let’s set this straight right away! According to Albert Breer, the Patriots informed the league the position title will be Executive Vice-President of Player Personnel, not General Manager. The last official GM the Patriots had was Patrick Sullivan.

The thing I took exception to was the Layden Robinson write-up. We seem to imagine that poor performances from rookies means we should just draft other rookies and stick them into the lineup.

Seems unrealistic.

Also, Jake Andrews played well, at least to my eyes.

Mafi had his problems but he was also making a transition and was thrown into a lineup of backups as the starters were either hurting or out.

Strange's return to the team resulted in clean pockets for Bailey Zappe and 5 straight 100+ yd running games. When he went out, Zappe returned to bad and our running game died (though that coincided with Rham's injury).

I remember being mortified that the GM was down on the field jawing at Millen. Bush league crap. Can you imagine this happening now? Some baddass player smacking the chit out of some nerd analyst after a loss? It would break the internet.

Comparing Polk to Devante Parker is beyond laughable. They don’t line up the same way, run routes the same way, or go for the ball the same way. Some people’s brains can’t go anywhere beyond simple word associations like “contested catch”.

Watch the way Polk creates late separation/catch space. He plays much more like A combo if Nacua and Keenan Allen. Obviously not saying he’ll reach that level, but I’ll be surprised if Polk isn’t a perennial 900+ yard receiver.

This. Strange’s contribution in the ground game is absolutely underrated. I know people don’t like where he was drafted, but it doesn’t change the fact he’s been solid in his role in that.

I like McConkey, too (watched a lot of Georgia). He's not big and has had some concerning injuries, though - broken foot, turf toe, back problem... He's also far more redundant with Pop Douglas, Bourne, even Osborne and Juju. Polk and Baker are both X receivers.

I'd take Polk over him (throw in Baker with Polk vs. McConkey and it's a slam dunk).

Again, a draft grade is incomplete for three years.

Trade down for who and for what? I've seen these type of posts (DaBruinz etc). If you see the guy you want at QB at 3 you f--ing take him. Trading down for some mid round picks isnt going to accomplish squat for this team. Take your guy. Trading down for that weak ass MN set of picks would have been dumb.

Did you read the article? I'll edit my post to show quotes, but that's from the article.

Patrick's revenge was cursing Millen to be the worst sports GM ever

The worst general managers in sports history

"...I would have rather seen a trade-down and taken a lesser QB such as JJ McCarthy and filled the bigger need of a starting left Tackle."

- They could've had their cake and eaten it too, without having to trade from 3.

The worst part about the trade from 34 is what happened immediately afterwards at 35.

"...They sacrificed taking a Left Tackle at this point perhaps because they did not believe any of the available Left Tackles could start immediately."

- If the FO still insisted on drafting a WR with their second pick, then the pick should've been Adonai Mitchell... Otherwise, they should've taken one of the OTs and waited for Polk at 68; or at the very, Very least have taken Kieran Amagadjie at 68 and waited for Wallace at 103... Agree with your opinion on the dude they did take at 103, and on the one they should've taken instead.

Didn't like either of their 6th-round picks, though I did like the selection of Jaheim Bell in the 7th, especially because they didn't acquire JaTavion Sanders late on day 3 like a trade with the Fail-cons instead of the Chargers would've provided them the opportunity of doing.

Quinnen Williams thinks you are funny man.

Morse is undoubtedly correct that the early run in OTs caught the Patriots flat footed. And it didn’t help they made love publicly to Notre Dame RT Blake Fisher. He’s a guy unlike Caedan Wallace with LT experience.

Blake Fisher was the plan at 68. He should have been available.

If they knew now what was going to happen, the pick in the second (after another trade down?) would be LT. My choice was Patrick Paul who the Phins took at 55.

I remember Sullivan going after Millen like a little Bantam Rooster going after a Bear. He was seriously talking **** but considering the size differential it was beyond stupid. LOL
