Negotiating Strategy 101: Don't burn your bridges ...unless Mankins intended that

More evidence of deliberately burned bridges from Teddy Bruschi man who played alongside Mankins.

"Tedy Bruschi shared his thoughts on the contract beef between offensive lineman Logan Mankins and the Patriots, saying he thinks things could get ugly between the player and the team.

“Logan doesn’t say much, so when he speaks, he means it,” Bruschi said in the clip above. “And when he talks about keeping your word and how you treat people, these are strong words from a strong-minded man. I don’t anticipate seeing Logan Mankins in a Patriots uniform anytime soon.”

Frankly, I'm almost glad things have turned out this way. I just can't see paying 7m per year to a Guard in this offense especially when the team still has to take care of TB.

Mankins agent, Frank Bauer, has advised Mankins very poorly. According to reports, the 7M offer was on the table for a 'significant amount of time' and 'without a counter' by Bauer. If this is true, Mankins has no one to blame but his agent who is also at fault for allowing Mankins to go off as he did. The agent should never have allowed that to happen.

The first rule in negotiating is this:

Never ever let it become personal. It's business; it's money.

Mankins let it become personal. Now, it's the Pats' choice to continue to try to negotiate or to call it quits. Either way, it's time for Bauer to take control of Mankins with a gag order.

When Ty Law said nasty things about BB, I don't think Bill liked it, but I doubt he lost any sleep over it. Now Bob Kraft, that's another matter entirely. There's always been a suspicion that Mike Vrabel's comments about the extravagance of Patriot Place vs. the team playing hardball with the union contributed to his being shipped out. My guess is that Kraft, unlike BB, takes this type of stuff very personally. While I hope I'm wrong, I think Logan is history here.

You are the one who does not understand negotiations.

Mankins understands that the patriots will not sign him to a long-term deal acceptable to him. It is time for him to the next negotiating step. He has chosen a public statement attacking patriot management. This is not a new tactic.

CURRENT GOALS OF MANKINS
It seems unnecessary to state the obvious, but here goes.

A) Mankins wants a long-term deal for top dollar, and lots of guaranteed monies. He now FINALLY understands that he will not get the deal he will accept from the patriots.

B) Mankins wants to be traded and start a loing-term deal in 2010 for someone else.

C) If he cannot be traded, he wants a $5M plus contract for one year from the patriots.

D) If all else fails, Mankins will make next to nothing for minimum participation and play with the patriots.
=============

You can criticize Mankins and his agent if you wish. The situation is simply that their goals are different than you think that they should be.

No YOU are the one who doesn't understand negotiation tactics!!! /JK

Seriously, here's the thing: by publicly slamming the Patriots and the Krafts like he has, he has made it much more unlikely that either A), B), or C) is going to happen. So again, it appears that he and his agent have painted themselves into a corner. It's a shame that they felt they had to do this because the Patriots held all the cards, but it was stupid IMO. I don't see Mankins winning this battle, so now everyone loses.

Here is Reiss' thoughts on trading Mankins from today's ESPN chat:

"Mike Reiss
(2:09 PM)

I think it has to be a first-round pick at minimum, Anthony. As for suitors, I'd only be guessing at this point. I think he'd be a great fit for the Colts -- given their offseason goal of getting tougher up front -- but that wouldn't be their m.o. and I can't imagine the Patriots trading with them."

OK, so you understanding is that because Mankins spoken out, Kraft will make a poor/spiteful business decision and choose not to secure a 2nd for Mankins and instead have a problem all year and have Mankins showing up in October???
