Bill Belichick takes the blame for Kenny Stills racing past Kyle Van Noy for TD

Would anyone named Harbaugh say that?
"Mr. Grit" Pagano? LOL.
Ryan? double-LOL.

-------
Belichick taking responsibility for the defense not quite rotating their coverage to help Van Noy on Kenny Stills, who scored an easy TD:

“I think really, that play was probably my fault than anybody else’s,” Belichick said. “There were certainly things that could’ve been better on it but in the end, we had some flexibility in our coverages and we make adjustment in coverages from time to time, based on a formation or based on the type of pattern that another team is running. I think this is just one of those where really the players were trying to do the right thing. We were trying to get to something that would’ve helped us but it just kind of didn’t work out and that’s again, really, probably more my fault because we just didn’t have it clean enough.

“It just wasn’t presented well enough [and] they didn’t understand it and it just obviously didn’t play out the way we wanted it to. The players are trying to do the right thing. They had the right idea. We were trying to apply something and we just didn’t quite have it right and that really, that goes back to me more than anybody else. I’ll take that one.”

wait, isn't he SUPPOSED to be some sort of smug egomaniac?

that's the narrative they are selling.

Portrayed that way to haul in clicks for their articles (which is pretty much always). Why put in some work and find a way to make the man open up? that will interest maybe 1 out of 10 general sport fans.

Drama might get you clicks from all 32 fan bases.

What did you expect him to say?
"Van Noy let his man get behind him. It was Matt Patricia's fault for calling for a defense where a LB has to cover a receiver. Actually, if Jamie Collins were here, he has the closing speed to make that play."

I dunno, man. I think he's just covering for Van Noy. His man got past him deep because he was passing him off to a safety that wasn't there. That's not BB's fault. That's Kyle's.
van noy on stills is a bad mismatch, even if he (van noy) didn't pass him off to a non-existent safety. so something wrong with the play call.
.

Still... what other head coach will publicly take the blame when a player screws up? I guess only one with job security!

Actually the telecast showed that play a few times, blame was 50-50 on Van Noy, and McCourty. McCourty had to pick one receiver to help on, and he chose the sideline. That left Van Noy as the only player deep in the center.

Even if he was here, he would have never could have covered Sills there. Miscommunication happens sometimes. Good teaching point.

I will say this. If the plan was to have Van Noy on Stills you need a new plan. That was a bad defensive call or someone didn't substitute for the look.

My question is even if he tries to cover him instead of passing him off would you expect Stills not to beat Van Noy?

Bruce Arians would immediately say the fault was on him (lol)

Hehe, definitely.

"It's been a snap and hold and a kick or a punt all year. Coaches don't do any of those things."

Yeah, there were two guys close to each other, someone was probably supposed to cover deep, looked like McCourty but who knows, doubt Van Noy was supposed to cover him all the way.

I'm guessing that they had been coached up to expect something a little different in terms of tendencies to come from that personnel grouping and alignment. In that case, props to Adam Gase for a new wrinkle.

You can't assign blame as an outsider without knowing the responsibilities of the players and coverage type on any given play. Bill has said as much, even for him when dissecting other teams tape.

If he takes blame for not having the right pieces in place, be it personnel or on field communications (was McClellin with the green dot?), I would take his word.

Not if the safety was SUPPOSED to be there.

It wasn't van noys man.
Can not was in the short zone in front of the deep zone it was thrown to. No more his fault than a dl.
