What if I told you the Patriots could draft a guy in the 3rd or maybe even later who is:
6'0"
198 lbs
last year reportedly ran a 4.22 40 yard dash at his school pro day by 3 different watches
this year ran a 4.33 at his pro day
had a 39" vertical at his pro day.
Can catch the ball out of the backfield
Sounds good, right?
They can and I hope they do. If you read the Binky thread then you know I am talking about Taiwan Jones out of Eastern Washington

Had some free time(sickness) to watch some film on this guy and here is why I really like this kid. I will give you some negatives as well, but this kid has potential to be great.
Positives:
Explosive-probably the most explosive player in the draft, looks like he is shot out of a cannon.
Speed-after the initial burst, he runs away from everyone, obviously the 4.33 40 yard dash and 39" vertical are not just off the field attributes.
Balance-my favorite feature of this kid. There are so many plays where it looks like he is going to be down and somehow keeps his balance and spins out for 10-15 yards extra
Hands-this is limited, but he does catch the ball naturally.
Elusiveness-He has great cutting ability, one second he is there, the next he is gone.

Negatives:
Injuries are an issue, which you have to take into account
Intelligence-he does have a learning disability(dislexia) so learning a complicated playbook could be an issue
Competition-playing at Eastern Washington did not bring a lot of top talent for him to go against. I will say though that he dominated the competition, which you look for in these types of players
Vision: This is the one think that he needs to work on as far as on the field goes. I saw some plays where he took the wrong hole, tends to favor cutting to the outside, but that may not work in the NFL as everyone will be much faster
Pass Protection-never had to do it in college and he will need to be able to do it in the pro.

So, I know a lot of people here like Ingram because of his powerful running style and burst. Jones has that type of skillset and he is a homerun threat. He is an amazing talent that has some off field issues (injuries and learning disability, not attitude or trouble) that could drop him down, and he is not talked about because he is just now getting back to healthy, but he could be the best running back in this draft and I hope the patriots can nab him with the #90 pick.

CJ Spiller comes to mind.

Jones is bigger framed, but just as explosive as Spiller, and he cuts better. I think Jones can handle the load better if he stays healthy. I know that sounds weird, but what I mean is in theory, his body is built more like an everydown back. Spiller is much more of a threat catching the ball than Jones is though.

I'd say why do you want to replace Danny Woodhead with a guy we hope turns out as good as him? :confused3:

Just generically speaking, I like Jones too. If he goes to the Jets that sound you'll hear is me throwing stuff at my TV. But I don't think he brings anything to the Pats that we don't already have, in spades.

I have to admit, the last name that came to mind when I watched this film was Danny woodhead. First, he is almost a 6" taller and about 40 lbs heavier. We are not going to ask Jones to be a pass catcher out of the backfield, he is a run thumper, up the middle guy. Not sure what tape you watched and what gave you the Danny Woodhead comparison, but I would use those as 2 complete opposites if someone asked me.
Also, I think most of us would agree that Spiller is much more talented physically than Danny Woodhead. Woodhead is a great story and played great for us last year, but his upside is what you saw last year, he is not a give the ball 20 times all year long kind of running back. You can barely call him a running back at this point. Woodhead is perfect for the role that he is asked to play, I see no comparision to what Jones would be asked to do in the Patriots offense.

Danny Woodhead? If I was to liken his style to anyone currently in the Pros it would be Jamaal Charles. Of course, I don't get too many chances to see Eastern Washington play, this is just based on the clips...

Charles is not a bad comparison at all. What I like is the thought of the combination of BJGE and this kid being a nice compliment to each other and giving our running game more explosion overall.

This guy has the biggest upside of all the runningbacks and compliments BJGE.

Besides the speed he also has the moves, pats need to draft him at #60. :rocker:

This guy has never been able to stay healthy and has 17 fumbles in the last three years. He's explosive and very exciting, but he comes with a lot of risk.

Some pretty bottom line analysis. Lets go ahead and scratch him off the list.

Hmmm...the first time I saw his film I instantly compared him to Garrett Wolfe. I see Jones is about 5" taller than Wolfe but he fumbles a lot, where as Wolfe had no fumbles in college. I still think their running styles are semi-similar, but it looks like Jones is a better overall RB.....I'd still rather have Vereen or Hunter, but I'd be happy with Jones.

Similar to Brooks Reed with Clay Matthews, Jones needs to give Chris Johnson his signing bonus if he's drafted in the top 2 rounds.
